SOPHIE BERKLE (STERN) Its with great sadness, the family of Sophie Berkle announces her passing on November 14, 1999. Her memory is cherished by her children; Meryle Lewis, Shelly (Honey) Berkle, Karen (John) McNally, her grandchildren; Brent (Winnie), Heather (Don), Alayna (Jean-Louie), Jody, Matthew, Jennifer and David, as well as her great-grandchildren; Alexandra, Sammi and Cameron. Sophie was predeceased by her husband, Morris in 1986 and her sisters, Jennie Tennenhouse and Cecile Mushkat and her son-in-law, Dr. Errol Lewis. Missing her are her sisters Rena Rittberg, Becky (Harry) Rosenberg, Sali (Chaim) Ben-Ezra, brothers; Murray (Feiga) Stern, Sam (Annette) Stern, Syd (Eleanor) Stern and many nieces and nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in law, Rabbi Louis (Sarah) Berkal, Abe (Hilda) Berkal and Clara Berkal. Everyone who knew our mom recognized her for her kindness, sweetness and unselfishness. She enjoyed her many years working at Joseph Wolinsky School and a tribute was paid to her for her many years of dedicated service. Music was very much a part of her life. She sang with and served as president of the Rosh Pina Synagogue Choir. Mom enjoyed a wide circle of friends and was active within the community. We sincerely thank the staff at the Sharon Home for all their devoted care. Funeral service was held November 17, at Rosh Pina Synagogue, interment at Rosh Pina Memorial Park. Shiva will be observed at her daughter Meryles home, after 3:00 p.m., November 17 thru November 22. Donations may be made to the Sharon Home, 146 Magnus Ave., Wpg., MB R2W 2B4.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • Many years later, I have never forgot my bobby Sophie or my Zaida Morris. I often think of them and I often think they are looking on at their descendents - and I hope with awe. They have three beautiful children, who are contributing members of their society - Meryle (my mom), Shelley and Karen. And with the grace of God, they all had children; Brent, Heather (me), and Alayna (us three from Meryle), Jodie and Matthew (Shelley and Honey) and Jennifer and David (Karen and John). I remember all the fun we had with our grand parents!! How, if they looked after us when our parents were out of town, we misbehaved horridly - and they never told. I remember, my Zaida - had a bit of a hearing issue - my brother Brent and I would stand behind him - then jump - yep he spilled his drink every time!!! I remember Bobby chasing us through the circuit that was our house - note, we were faster and more nimble (climbed in to coffee cabinets - yes, and jumped out! regularly). So much fun. Where does the time go? Perhaps my point here, is to enjoy every moment - with each generation!!! My Bobby Sophie and my Zaida Morris left me with such memories. I wish I could share all here!! But, i fear, so many years later, no one but me is so responding!!! I'd like to share one last thought and that would be my 85 year old Bobby Sophie pushing her walker (wearing a discreet garment) with my three year old daughter Sammi (also wearing a discreet garment!) riding on the front wheels...... While Elton John may have sang about the circle of life.. my family lived it! Am proud to be the grand daughter of Morris and Sophie Berkle - Posted by: Heather Dembinsky Larke (Grand Daughte) on: Feb 13, 2013
