CARL ROLAND JOSEFSEN HANSEN It is with sorrow we announce the peaceful passing of Carl, on November 18 with his family around him. He leaves to mourn his loving wife and partner of 47 years, Sophie; one son David (Cathy) and daughter Christine (Kevin) one brother Hjalmar (Betty) several nieces, nephews and in-laws. Carl was predeceased by his mother Ida in 1979 and his father Morten in 1998. Carl was born and raised in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and attended Pleasant Hill Public School and the Saskatoon Technical Collegiate. After completing his schooling, he decided to travel and wound up in Churchill, Manitoba where he gained employment in the power house of the National Harbours Board and thus the beginning of his life long career as a power engineer. Carl met Sophie, his wife-to-be, in Churchill and when she decided to return to Winnipeg, he pulled up stakes and followed. Sophie and Carl were married on August 9, 1952. He worked in several power plants in the province and spent a considerable amount of his career with Bailey Meter Company Limited, working in Industrial Instrumentation. He retired as Chief Engineer from the Selkirk Mental Health Center in August, 1989. Carl was an active member of the Masonic Order and Master of his Lodge, Acacia No. 111, in 1987. He spent happy hours enjoying the fellowship and socializing with the Masons. His greatest enjoyment was the little family cottage that he and Sophie had at Red Rock Lake in the Whiteshell Park. He spent many a happy hour in his little workshop tinkering at this and that - as he always said; "Making more sawdust and firewood than anything else." He also enjoyed the outdoors and especially the many walks and hikes that he had together with his partner Sophie. The family wish to thank Dr. McGowan, Dr. Lezak and all the staff of the Misericordia Hospital Oncology Department, especially Janet, Debbie, Donna, Jan, the V.O.Ns. especially Mariette, Homecare, Isaac Froese, Carls Palliative Care companion and the nurses on 3E, Riverview Hospital. There will be a Masonic Memorial Service, open to the public (regalia may be worn) in the chapel at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue on Tuesday, November 23 at 3:00 p.m. A gathering of family and friends will follow in the Chapel Lawn Funeral Reception Centre. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Masonic Foundation of Manitoba, 420 Corydon Ave., Winnipeg, MB., R3L 0N8, or to a charity of your choice.
