JACK SERKIN Jack passed away on November 15, 1999 at the age of 83 years. He was born in Winnipeg October 30, 1916. He will be sadly missed by Phyllis, his wife of 56 years; children, Beryl (Paul Walsh), Howard Serkin, Dale (Ian Rayter) grandchildren, Zarah, Kate, Dana, Nathan, Jared and Aaron; sister, Bessie Silverman; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Ben and Nellie, Jackie and Shirley, Paul and Lydia Zaidman; aunty Jennie Stier; nephews, nieces and cousins. Jack was predeceased by his brother Nathan, his father Berel and mother Sonia. Jack grew up in Winnipegs North End and attended Isaac Newton School. He will best be remembered as the cheerful bus driver of Winnipeg Transit, where he was employed for 31 years. Jack truly enjoyed his work and was recognized for his congeniality by Winnipeg Transit as well as the many bus passengers whose lives he touched with his warmth and generosity. In August of 1979 Jack retired from Winnipeg Transit and moved with Phyllis to Victoria, B.C. where they enjoyed a quiet life. In the summer of 1996 Jack and Phyllis returned to family and friends in Winnipeg. He was an avid reader, a keen observer of politics and enjoyed long outdoor walks. Jack was a man of integrity, without pretense. Honesty and compassion were his benchmark traits. We would like to thank Doctor N. Hechtenthal, the staff at the Sharon Home and Seven Oaks Hospital for their care they gave to Jack. Funeral services were held at Rosh Pina Synagogue with interment at Shaarey Zedek Cemetery. Donations can be made to a charity of your choice.
