Hubicz, P.H., J.C.L., retired Roman Catholic Priest of the Archdiocese of Winnipeg died at St. Josephs Residence on Friday, November 19, 1999. He was born September 25, 1912 in Bidzanour, Poland and brought to Canada as an infant in 1913. He received his early education at St. John Cantius Parish School, Lord Nelson and Isaac Newton Schools in Winnipeg. In 1929 he attended St. Johns College in St. Jean, Quebec and then entered the Poznan Diocesan Seminary in Poland in 1935, finishing his preparation for ordination to priesthood with one year at St. Augustines Seminary in Toronto. His degrees include a B.A. from the University of Montreal and J.C.L. from the University of Ottawa, Canon Law studies (1949 - 1951). Msgr. Hubicz was ordained to the priesthood on July 16, 1939 for the Archdiocese of Winnipeg by Most Rev. A.A. Sinnott. During his 46 years of active ministry he served as Parochial Vicar at Holy Trinity, Sifton (1939) St. John Cantius, Winnipeg (1940-43) and Pastor at Sts. Peter and Paul, Pine River (1943-44) Corpus Christi, Winnipegosis (1944-49) St. Michaels Gimli and Our Lady of the Lake, Winnipeg Beach (1956-67) and St. John Cantius, Winnipeg (1967-85). He also served as Chaplain to the Missionary Oblate Sisters of Mary Immaculate; Sisters of St. Benedict and the Sisters of the Holy Names. Other appointments included Vice Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Winnipeg (1951) Chancellor (1952-56) Director of the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine; and Defender of the Bond, Marriage Tribunal (1952-68). He also served briefly as Vicar General during the absence of the Cardinal in 1969. His Holiness, Pope Paul VI appointed him as a Prelate of Honour and His Eminence George Bernard Cardinal Flahiff, C.S.B., D.D. invested him on December 15, 1974. Msgr. Hubicz retired from active ministry on August 3, 1985. He authored three books: The History of Our Lady of the Lake Church (1956) Father Joe A. Manitoban Missionary (1958) and Polish Churches in Manitoba (1960). Msgr. Hubicz was predeceased by his parents, Michael and Petronella (Wroblonski) Hubicz, as well as his brothers, Albert, Joseph, Frank and Bernard and his sisters, Sister Eleanor Hubicz, OSB and Katherine Strong. He is survived by his sister Jean Kinal of Vancouver, BC; his niece Patricia Bridges of Winnipeg and several great nieces and nephews. A vigil will be held at St. John Cantius Church, 846 Burrows Ave. on Sunday, November 21, beginning with the reception of the body at 3:00 p.m. followed by prayers at 7:30 p.m. The Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated in St. Marys Cathedral, 353 St. Mary Ave. on Monday, November 22 at 10:00 a.m. The Most Rev. Leonard J. Wall, S.T.D., D.D., Archbishop of Winnipeg will preside; Rev. Henry Uczniak will deliver the homily. A reception will follow in St. Marys Hall with interment later at Assumption Cemetery.
