A. ETHEL McVETY On Sunday, November 21, 1999 at the Dauphin Regional Health Centre, Agnes Ethel McVety of Portage la Prairie, passed away at the age of 84 years, following a lengthy illness. Ethel was born on July 31, 1915 at Rossendale, Manitoba, daughter of William and Violet (Main) Moffat. She received her education at Rossendale School, Portage Collegiate Institute and attended Normal School in Winnipeg. Following completion of her teachers training she taught school in Currie, Lavenham and Rossendale school districts until her marriage to Wesley McVety on February 11, 1939. Following their marriage, Wes and Ethel farmed successfully at Bagot until December, 1954. They moved to Portage la Prairie where Ethel taught at Victoria School from September, 1955 until June, 1958. In September, 1958 following Wes transfer to Regina she taught school at Lakeview, Davin, Strathcona and Wascana Schools until her retirement in 1979. Wes and Ethel returned to live in Portage la Prairie in March of 1991, where she resided until her illness. Ethel was a charter member of the Business and Professional Womens Club of Portage la Prairie. She was also active in Anget Temple, Daughters of the Nile while living in Regina. Over her lifetime Ethel was an accomplished homemaker and most gracious hostess who enjoyed many hours sewing, knitting and crocheting. She was active in her community, lending her time and talents wherever they were needed, whether it be leading a Mission Band, leading a 4-H Club, preparing baking or serving on an executive. One of her particular talents was her beautiful handwriting and she was often asked to do inscriptions for presentation in books and documents. Curling was a much-enjoyed sport both as a participant while living at Bagot and as a spectator sport in later years. She and Wes enjoyed many trips, especially following their retirements but probably none were more enjoyed than their trips to Clear Lake and to visit their family. Predeceased by her husband Wes in January, 1997; her parents and her sister Anne Finnie, she leaves to mourn her passing her daughter Wilma and her husband Jack Robinson of Dauphin; her granddaughters, Joelle and her husband Brad Collett of Dauphin, Carla and her husband John Butterfield of Laurier, and her great-granddaughters, Hayley and Jacquelyn Butterfield. Also surviving are her brother Robert (Freda) Moffat; her sister Minnie McVety and numerous nieces and nephews. Flowers are gratefully declined. Should friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to Trinity United Church Memorial Fund, 15 Tupper St., Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, R1N 1W8 or to Knox-Metropolitan United Church Memorial Fund, 2340 Victoria Avenue, Regina, Saskatchewan, S4P 0S6.
