HALLDOR EGILL MARTIN September 24, 1914 - November 21, 1999 After a brief illness, Halldor passed away peacefully at the Grace General Hospital on November 21, 1999, beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather, Great-Grandfather, Brother and Uncle. He was predeceased by his parents, Laugi and Sigga Martin; daughter-in-law Carol Martin; brothers, Herb, Gunnsi and Alfred; and sisters, Frances, Fredrikka and Emily. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 58 years, Lilja; son John (Shirley), daughter Valdina (Donald) Duncan, son Sigmar (Deborah), daughter Pauline (Haukur) Asgeirsson, Son Melvin (Jackie) grandchildren, David (Carla), and Dennis (Sharon) Martin, Jason (Lori), Erin, Matthew (Angela), and Hugh Duncan, Todd and Amanda Martin, Erik and Leif Asgeirsson and Helen Martin; great-grandchildren, Madison, Dawson and Maxwell Martin, Tony, Amelia and Drew Duncan, and Abigail Martin. Halldor also leaves his sister Christine (Mac) Harkess; sisters-in-law, Rae and Gudrun Martin, Sigrun, Olga and Ingunn Palsson. Dad was born and raised on the family homestead (Lauga land) at Hnausa, Manitoba. It was there that he met and married our Mom, October 1, 1941 and together they built the home we all knew in our childhood. The community will remember him as a fisherman, farmer and sawmill operator. In 1967, Mom and Dad moved to Brandon where Dad was employed with the Brandon University until retirement in 1979. His last years were spent in Winnipeg where he enjoyed his main hobby - the violin and also bow making and repairing. Dad was a very sociable community orientated person with involvement on the school board, church, Icelandic choir and Icelandic Club. His family was always first and foremost. We will always remember him for the sparkle in his blue eyes, his generosity, sincerity and good humour. Special thanks to the many doctors and staff at the Grace Hospital for their excellent care and concern. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 25, at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. Interment to follow in the garden of the Good Samaritan at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens. A gathering of family and friends will follow in Chapel Lawn Reception Centre. In lieu of flowers, remembrances of Halldor may be sent to the Grace Hospital Foundation, 3 North, 300 Booth Drive.
