Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJOHN ARTHUR BUCHANAN Suddenly on November 30,1999, John Buchanan passed away at age 86. John was predeceased by his parents Ernest and Mabel Buchanan and his sister Margaret Buchanan. He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Ethel, daughter Hazel Stoyko (Lawrence), son Ian, grandchildren; Peter Stoyko, David Stoyko (Judy), Catherine Stoyko, Karen McKim (Ken), Michael Buchanan (Kathy), Gavin Buchanan, John Buchanan, and Heather Buchanan. Also surviving are his sister Dorothy Atkinson (Lloyd), nieces; Jane Baizley, Carol Prosk, nephew Donald Atkinson, and their families. He also cherished his "adopted" grandchildren, Darren, Geoff, Eric and Ken Magel, Stephen Buchalo, their mother Karen Sotvedt, their spouses and families. John graduated from Wesley College (University of Winnipeg) and the Faculty of Education, University of Manitoba. He started his career as Vice Principal of Stony Mountain School, then Principal of Kenton Consolidated School. During the Second World War he served overseas as an officer with the Royal Canadian Air Force. Returning to Winnipeg he resumed his teaching career at St. Johns-Ravenscourt School, Laura Secord School and JB Mitchell School. He was Vice Principal of Earl Grey School, Principal of Somerset School and finally Principal of Kent Road School from which he retired in June 1977. Jack was a scholar and educator. He was very interested in the development and usage of the English language. Throughout his life he had a passion for history and a powerful memory for world and local events, their significance and interrelationship. Above all John was a family man, who took joy in watching his grandchildren grow to be adults and took great pride in their academic achievements. His grandchildren loved to hear his air force stories and the way he brought history alive. The family would like to express their appreciation for the excellent care provided by Dr. A. Jowett. They would also like to thank the caring and compassionate service provided by the Winnipeg Fire Department, the Winnipeg Ambulance Service and Grace Hospital. A memorial service will be held in Thomson Funeral Chapels, 669 Broadway, on Saturday December 4, at 3:30 p.m. A reception will follow the service. THOMSON FUNERAL CHAPELS 783-7211
