PHYLLIS ISABEL SMITH Phyllis passed away peacefully after a lengthy illness on December 1, 1999 at the age of 77. Mom will be lovingly remembered by her husband Les Peterson; son Robert and wife Helen, grandchildren, Rachel, Rebecca and Aaron, daughter Kathy and husband Pete; daughter Val and husband Marc; sister June Knight and husband Les; cousin Marjorie Gilliland; and her four nieces and their families. Mom was born in Carroll, MB and trained as a nurse in Dauphin, graduating in 1944. She worked at Grace Hospital, where she met her first husband of 40 years, Vernon Smith. She and Dad moved with the CIBC around Southern Manitoba, settling in Winnipeg in 1960. Mom continued her career at numerous hospitals and nursing homes, with many years at Tache Nursing Centre, where she made many friends with whom she has remained in contact with over the years. After Dad passed away in 1988, Mom met Les on one of her many trips 10 years ago, and they settled down to a very happy life, full of new friendships, extended family and travel. Les has been devotedly at Moms side through her long illness, and we are truly thankful for him. Throughout her life, Mom was devoted to the United Church and its groups such as CGIT and the UCW. Her thoughts and cares were primarily with others, and that showed in everything she did. She spent much time volunteering with hospital and nursing home visitations, at the St. Boniface General Hospital gift shop and 10 years delivering with Meals on Wheels. Mom took great delight from her grandchildren and the children of those close to her. The family wishes to thank Carolyn Barrit of Medox Health Services, student nurse Chris, and the staff of the Palliative Care Unit at St. Boniface General Hospital. Also thank you to the many friends, relatives and neighbours for your care and comfort during Moms illness. A service of celebration will be held on Monday, December 6 at 10:00 a.m. at Fort Garry United Church, 800 Point Rd. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Moms memory to the Palliative Care Unit at the St. Boniface General Hospital, 409 Tache Ave., Winnipeg, MB R2H 9Z9. "Safe in the arms of Jesus"
