Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMERRIL (GENE) SLATER It is with great sorrow that we, the family, announce the sudden passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather and son, Merril on Friday, December 3, 1999 at the Health Sciences Centre at the age of 62 years. On March 23, 1937, Merril was born in Victoria, B.C. H served for a brief time in the R.C.N., and was able to see many parts of the world, serving as a cook. He was employed at Dominion Bridge in Winnipeg for over 30 years and for the last five, he was employed at Motor Coach Industries. Merril was an extremely hard worker and was never one to stay put. He was an exceptional handyman in which his many talents will be greatly missed. He loved his children and grandchildren very deeply and he had a desire for his children to be successful in anything that they do. In his spare time, Merril enjoyed camping. Merril was very dedicated to God and his Church, the Lutheran Church of The Cross. Over the years, he volunteered and served in various capacities, including as a deacon and elder serving on church council and at the time of his death, he was Chair of the Property Management Committee. Besides his loving wife, Margaret of 36 years of marriage, remaining to forever cherish Merrils memory are his children, Howard (Brenda) Kathy and Jeffrey; three grandchildren, Joshua, Aaron and Evan; his mother Mrs. Norman Slater of Victoria, B.C.; two brothers Barry (Del) of Mackenzie, B.C. and Howard (Teresa) of Prince George, B.C.; sisters-in-law, Irene Harvey (Gordon) Edna Beauvais; Mathilda Partaker; Pauline, Grace and Jeannine Guiboche; brother-in-law Edmond Guiboche (Grace) as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his father Leonard James Slater in 1957. Prayers will be held on Tuesday evening, December 7 at 8:00 p.m. in the Lutheran Church of The Cross, 560 Arlington St. Merrils Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, December 8 at 10:00 a.m., also in the church with Pastor Christoph Reiners officiating. Interment will follow in the Stonewall Cemetery, Stonewall, MB. In lieu of flowers, as an expression of sympathy, memorial donations may be made in Merrils memory to the Manitoba Heart and Stroke Foundation, 301-352 Donald St., Wpg., MB R3B 2H8; Canadian Cancer Society (Manitoba Division), 193 Sherbrook St., Wpg., MB R3C 2B7; or to the Canadian Diabetes Association (Winnipeg and District Branch, Canada), 102-310 Broadway, Wpg., MB R3C 0S6.
