Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryHARRY DANIEL (DAN) JOHNSON VE4 HJ 1920 - 1999 Peacefully on December 4, 1999 at the Grace General Hospital, Dan passed away at age 79. Born to Harry and Martha Johnson in Winnipeg on April 24, 1920, Dan is survived by his wife of 54 years Claudia (nee Smith) son David and wife Barbara of Calgary; son Bruce and wife Debra of Winnipeg; five cherished grandchildren, Graham, Kevin, Kimberly of Calgary, Bryan, and Wesley of Winnipeg; one sister Evelyn and husband Cam Macdonald; and nephew Murray and family of London, ON. Dans whole life was spent in the aircraft industry, working first for Wings Ltd. in Ontario and Northern Manitoba as a radio operator. During the war years he was Superintendent of #5 AOS (Air Observers School) in Winnipeg. From there, he worked in Montreal for CPA and then in Charlottetown for Maritime Central. In 1946 he joined Air Canada and spent 35 years in Avionics as a technician, supervisor in aircraft electronic maintenance, and instructor, retiring in 1981. At an early age Dan was fascinated with electronics and amateur radio. He was first licensed in 1937 as VE4 AGA and shortly after obtained both his advanced and 2nd class Commercial tickets. He was an active amateur, building and experimenting with his equipment and communicating around the world. In 1937 he also received a diploma from the American School of Chicago in radio. Dan volunteered his time and experience serving on several amateur radio leagues and clubs including Director for ARLM (Amateur Radio League of Manitoba), Assistant Director ARRL (American Radio Relay League) Manitoba section, founding President and Technical Director for the Winnipeg Repeater Society Inc., Technical Chairman for the Winnipeg Amateur Radio Club, as well as Manitobas first radio amateur to join QCWA (Quarter Century Wireless Association) and was a member of the Western Canadian Aviation Museum Inc. He was an avid reader spending many hours at Winnipeg libraries. He also loved to travel and shared his knowledge and experiences, especially those of Great Britain. He cherished his role as a father and grandfather and will be lovingly remembered by his family. At the familys request a private service will be held. The family would like to extend their thanks to Home Care and Grace General Hospital.
