KATHRYNE (TINA) WARKENTIN NICKEL 1926 - 1999 With her family and husband Jacob at her side, Tina Nickel died peacefully December 9, 1999 at the Steinbach Bethesda Hospital. Tina was born on April 11, 1926 to Rev. Isaak and Katharina Warkentin in Grunfeld, South Russia. In fall of 1929 when under death threat the family decided to move to Canada and arrived in Winkler in spring of 1930 and eventually moved to Steinbach. Tina attended the Ridgewood School and Steinbach High School and in the fall of 1944 entered nurses training graduating in 1946 and became a nurse at Bethesda Hospital. In the fall of 1948 Tina married Jacob Nickel, a farmer from western Manitoba. They moved to Steinbach in 1951 and had four children, Robert, David, Mary Anna and Joan. She later returned to her nursing career at Bethesda Hospital, retiring in 1975. Tina was very active in the Steinbach Mennonite Church, being the daughter of the first minister. She participated in many singing groups, sang solos and worked hard as a member of the ladies aid groups. Following Jacobs retirement, he and Tina had many happy years together, spending as much time as they could at Caliper Lake, Ontario, where they had a trailer and a fishing boat. Tina Nickel is survived by her husband Jacob; son Robert (Sally) son David (Tina) daughter Mary Anne Babcock (Frank) and daughter Joan. She is also survived by her brother Jacob (Helen) Warkentin. Also missing her are six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. The funeral service for Tina Nickel will be held on Monday, December 13 at the Steinbach Mennonite Church at 10:30 a.m. with interment to follow in the Heritage Cemetery. Viewing at Birchwood Funeral Chapel on Sunday, December 12 from 7:00 - 8:00 p.m. and prior to the service. Arrangements entrusted to Birchwood Funeral Chapel, 150 Penfeld Dr., Steinbach, Man.
