HAROLD RICHARD HALLETT Harold Richard Hallett, a long time resident of Oak Bay, passed peacefully from this life on Wednesday, December 1, 1999. Harold was born in St. James, MB on September 17, 1912. He was the eldest child of Richard Hallett and Sigrid Thorarinson. He was one of five children. His sister Pearl Hallett Campbell of Toronto survives him. His brothers, Leslie and Stanley and his sister Kathleen all predeceased him. He was also predeceased by his beloved wife Aileen in 1997. The Hallets are a venerable old Winnipeg family with roots among the early fur traders, western Canadas First Nations and the Lord Selkirks Settlers. They have lived in Winnipeg since 1823. Harold joined the R.C.A.F. in Winnipeg during the Second World War and was posted to Patricia Bay where he served as an Aircraft Mechanic until the end of the war. He was wounded by "friendly fire" while on a plane dragging an airborne target and had the shrapnel scars on his leg to prove it. After hostilities ceased Harold went to work for Victoria Press as a linotype operator, a position he proudly held until his retirement. Harold had an enquiring mind and he especially relished studying and learning. He enjoyed a long and happy retirement with Aileen. They celebrated 60 years of marriage on August 1, 1996. Aileen loved to travel and Harold especially enjoyed photographing all the places they visited. Left to celebrate Harolds life are his son Dr. Richard Ronald Hallett and his wife Heather (Morison) of Castlegar, BC; his grandsons, Douglas and partner Keiko Olomo and William Hallett; his daughter Mary Joyce Hallett Abbate and her husband Joseph of Los Angeles, California. He will also be missed by many nieces, nephews and cousins in Manitoba and Ontario. A funeral service will be held at First Memorial Funeral Chapel on Monday, December 6 at 4:00 p.m. followed by cremation. FIRST MEMORIAL FUNERAL SERVICES (250) 384-5512
