FREDRICK ZIEGLER With deep sadness, we announce the sudden passing of Fredrick Ziegler, our beloved husband, father and grandfather, on December 13, 1999, with his family at his side. Fred will be lovingly remembered by his wife Florence; his daughter and son-in-law Carol and Tim Kurbis, and his precious grandsons, Graham and Garrett. He is also survived by his sister Mary; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Anne and William Ostrowski, Tessie Kostenchuk and Irene and Al Currie; as well as numerous other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Carl and Celeste Ziegler, and sisters, Catherine Barteaux and Lois Michaels. Fred was born in Transcona, where he resided his entire life, on August 22, 1924. He began a long career with the Canadian National Railway in 1941 as a machinist. In 1942, he volunteered for the Royal Canadian Navy as an E.R.A., serving time primarily in the Atlantic, and became a petty officer. He resumed his employment at the C.N.R. at the conclusion of the war, and retired in 1986 as a supervisor in the Equipment Department. Fred had many outside interests and activities. He was an avid golfer, and was made a life member of the Transcona Golf Club for his work in helping to establish the club. Most recently, he was an active member of Elmhurst Golf & Country Club for 15 years. Fred also enjoyed curling, through which he made many lasting friendships. Freds family was extremely important to him. He was a dedicated husband and father, and has left many lasting memories of our time spent together. His grandchildren have brought him immense joy and pride, and will greatly miss their "Papa". His memory will be cherished by all who have had the privilege of knowing him. His sense of humour, generosity and story-telling abilities will be remembered fondly. The family would like to thank the staff on D2 and the Emergency Department of Health Sciences Centre, especially nurses, Carol Asham and Julie Barnard for their care and kindness. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, December 17 at St. Joseph the Worker Parish, 505 Brewster St., with Fr. Wenceslao Rebillaco officiating. Interment to follow in the Transcona Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, if friends so wish, donations made in Freds memory to Cancer Care Manitoba or to the Heart & Stroke Foundation, would be greatly appreciated. Transcona Funeral Chapel in care of arrangements.
