ALEX BABINSKY It is with great sadness we announce that peacefully at Holy Family Nursing Home, Alex Babinsky, 82 years, passed away on December 17, 1999. Alex was born in Yosopilka, Ukraine March 9, 1917. Alex was one of six children born to parents, Anna and Michael. He lived the first part of his life in the Ukraine and as a young man served in wars. In around 1958 Alex arrived in Canada and spent the first years working in the San Antonio Gold Mines. He arrived in Canada with nothing, but after working hard in the mines and also as a brick layer, he managed to save enough to start his own business. It was in Winnipeg where he met his wife and lifetime partner Anne, in his newly opened restaurant. Together, through hard work and commitment to each other they changed an old movie theatre into a successful business at the Golden Restaurant on Selkirk Avenue. They provided wonderful food and friendly service to all who entered, and one of the best bowls of borscht in Winnipeg. After 35 years Alex retired from the Golden Restaurant only to take a few years off and open Babas Restaurant. Again he established a devoted clientele. Alex and Anne lived, raised their family, worked and made many friendships on Selkirk Avenue over the forty years they lived there. Alex was a quiet, but strong working man and family values were important to him. He also was a strong believer in good education, and could often be heard telling his grandchildren how important school is and they must work hard at it. Alex was a member of the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of St. Vladimir and Olga. Alex was predeceased by his wife Anne, his brothers, Wasyl, Onofrey, Fidko and sister Catherina of Ukraine. Alex will be sadly missed by his sister Irena of Ukraine and his sons, Bohdan/Gordie and Michael (Andrea), his nine grandchildren, Krista, Myranda, Nicole, Alex, Andrew, Stephen, Mackenzie, Jake and Isaac, and many other relatives and friends that were so much a part of his life in Canada and Ukraine. His family would like to extend their sincerest thanks to the staff of the Holy Family Nursing Home and the doctors that looked after him throughout the years. Prayers will be held at the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of St. Vladimir and Olga, 94 McGregor St. (McGregor and Stella), on Wednesday, December 22, 1999 at 7:00 p.m. Divine Funeral Liturgy will be held at the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of St. Vladimir and Olga on Thursday, December 23, 1999 at 10:00 a.m. with Father Michael Kouts presiding and interment will follow at All Saints Cemetery. A reception will be held at Knysh Funeral Chapel, 1020 Main St. after interment. DAD You and Mom were always together, side by side, Now Youre together again. Rest in Peace, We Love You Forever! Vichnaya Pamyat
