Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMARY HRUSHOVETZ (SHENKARCHUK) March 5, 1904 - December 22, 1999 After a brief illness, peacefully at the Holy Family Nursing Home on December 22, 1999, our beloved mother and grandmother Mary Hrushovetz passed away at the age of 95 years. She will be sadly missed and forever cherished by her sons, William Michael (Catherine), Semeon Bohdan (Margaret) her grandchildren, Mary Margaret, Semeon Bohdan Jr. and Stephen Michael. She will also be lovingly remembered by her sister Anne and brother Thomas (Marlene) her niece, nephews and cousins. Mary was predeceased by her husband Michael of 53 years; her first born son Stephen at birth; her parents, Joseph and Justina Shenkarchuk; her brothers, Michael, Nicholas, John and her sisters, Alma, Josephine and Lenna. Mary, the eldest of nine children, was born on March 5, 1904 in Pleasant Home on the family homestead. The family left the homestead and moved to Winnipeg (East Kildonan) where Mary attended Polson school. To supplement the family income, Mary at an early age worked in various households. After Marys and Michaels marriage they moved to Moose Jaw where Michael continued working for the railway. A few years later with their son William they returned to Winnipeg, buying a farm in North Kildonan where they became market gardeners. This was the beginning of Marys career as a gardener, a vocation which would last 70 years. Together the family toiled the land, enduring many hardships and overcoming many challenges. Following the death of her husband Michael in 1975, Mary continued market gardening. She participated in horticultural fairs winning many ribbons for her vegetables and flower entries. In 1980 Mayor William Norrie, on behalf of the city of Winnipeg presented Mary with an appreciation award naming her as the "Lady of the East Kildonan Country Fair". Mary was very proud to witness and participate in the dedication of a parcel of their land honouring her late husband by naming that portion "Michael Hrushovetz Park". Mary had a zest for life, never complaining about the hardships and challenges associated with gardening. Mary was a source of inspiration to family members and friends. She loved her family and encouraged them to do their best, to help others, and was very proud of their accomplishments. We express our sincere thanks to Dr. B. Gorski for his dedicated care and compassion, and to the kind and devoted staff on the fourth floor St. Josephs wing of the Holy Family Nursing Home. Funeral services will be celebrated at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street on December 24 at 11:30 a.m. with Very Rev. John A. Melnyk officiating. Interment at All Saints Cemetery. A gathering of family and friends will follow at the Cropo Funeral Chapel Reception Centre. Flowers gratefully declined. If desired, donations may be made to the Holy Family Nursing Home or to a charity of your choice. Mary was a devoted, caring and loving mother and grandmother and will always be remembered for her contagious smile and witty remarks. You were always there when we needed you No task too great or small With loving heart and willing hand For us you did it all Thank you for the years you gave us And the times we shared We only pray that when you left us You knew how much we cared Forever in our memory Mother, Baba Vichnaya Pamyat Cropo Funeral Chapel in care of arrangements, 586-8044.
