ALENA FERN CAUGHEY
Date of Passing: Dec 25, 1999
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryALENA FERN CAUGHEY (nee Asselstine) Peacefully at Grace Hospital on December 25, 1999, Alena Fern Caughey, aged 103 years, widow of the late Samuel Walker Caughey. Born in Napanee, Ontario, and moved as a child to Oakville, Manitoba. She was also predeceased by her sister Laura and five brothers, Harold, Wilbert, Ross, Ivan and Oris Asselstine. Alena will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Audrey Wilson and her husband Harry of Winnipeg; her son Glen and his wife Margaret of Toronto; her five grandchildren and their families including 11 great-grandchildren, as well as other relatives and family friends. Until recently Alena took an active interest in all those she came in contact with. She was a member of Norwood United Church and a former president and honorary life member of the UCW. She also delivered Meals on Wheels for many years, very often to those far younger than her 85 years. As a former school teacher, she always had stories and reading assignments to occupy those who visited her. A strong will and constitution as well as faith allowed her to persevere in the face of adversity - for example, she spent her 99th birthday in the hospital recovering from a broken hip; but with the aid of a walker, became mobile again. Lately as her body failed, we are thankful her mind and spirit were intact. She vacationed at Victoria Beach since the mid 1930s and enjoyed the cottage (there for more than 50 years). She took pride in living at 72 Monck Ave., Norwood for 60 years; however at age 97, welcomed the friendly atmosphere, personnel and bright, cheerful facilities at the Lyons Manor, 320 Sherbrook St., where she has resided since May 1993. Our thanks to the Manor staff homecare and to the doctors and nurses involved at Grace Hospital who made her passing more bearable and dignified. Cremation has taken place and in accordance with her wishes, no memorial service will be held.
