Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryFRIEDRICH WILHELM SCHWANDT On December 31, 1999 our father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away peacefully to be with his Lord. Friedrich was predeceased by his loving wife Frieda in November 1996. Friedrich was born on October 21, 1911 in Janowitz, Kreis Znin to Richard and Elisabeth Schwandt. He will be sadly missed by son Manfred (Thelma) daughters, Christa (Edgar) Lach, Ruth (Ron) Legere; grandchildren, Mark (Cindy) Lach, Paul (Shelley) Lach, Timothy Lach and Matthew Legere; great-grandchildren, Stephanie, Jason and Colin Lach. Also relatives in Germany and Canada. Dad was a very strong and determined man and as a result he obtained a good secondary education becoming a locomotive engineer on the German Bahn. He married Frieda Adeline Rux in 1937 and lived in Dietfurt, Germany with son Manfred and daughter Christa until the start of the Second World War. The family fled to West Germany to Gross Hehlen, Kreis Celle, Hanover where he became Burgermeister until they left for the land of freedom and opportunity, Canada in 1948. They arrived in Winnipeg on October 31, 1948 and lived in Plumas with their sponsors Gustav and Barbara Rossnagel for about half a year. The family moved to Winnipeg where Dad started to work in construction. Their third child, Ruth was born in Winnipeg. Both Dad and Mutti worked hard to establish their new home for their three children. Dad started his own construction company in the early 50s. Besides his many custom built homes and commercial construction, he was proud to be the general contractor of St. Johns Lutheran Church, Winnipeg where the family were involved for many years. Later Dad joined Western Glove Works Ltd. as Construction Manager where many of his talents were used. He was a hard worker and took great pride in his accomplishments and expected the same of others. For special times in their lives, Dad and Mutti enjoyed visiting with their friends and relatives sharing big meals and talking about their common experiences and many blessings in Canada. Other highlights in Dad and Muttis life included several trips to visit relatives and friends in Germany. Summers were spent camping in Manitoba, western Canada and USA. Dad enjoyed gardening and took great pride in growing blue spruce evergreens from seed and a variety of garden flowers and garden produce which he always shared. He was involved in church Council at St. Johns. He was a member of the German Society of Winnipeg for many years. During his retirement he enjoyed bowling, swimming and dancing. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba or a charity of your choice. Interment will take place at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens at 10:00 a.m. January 4, 2000 followed by a memorial service at St. Peters Lutheran Church, 65 Walnut St. at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Heimo Bachmeyer officiating.
