IGNAZIO SCALETTA It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ignazio Scaletta at his residence in Brandon on Wednesday, December 29, 1999, after a courageous battle with cancer. Ignazio was born in Termini Imerese, Italy on November 17, 1930. In December, 1949, he emigrated to Canada to join members of his family in Winnipeg, Manitoba. After a series of short-term jobs, he began employment with Fabris & Marinelli Ltd. in 1952, where he completed an apprenticeship in tilesetting. In 1965, he moved his family to Brandon and established his own business, Scaletta Marble and Tile Co. Ltd., which he operated up until the time of his illness. He especially enjoyed playing his trumpet, tending the plants in his greenhouse, spending time with his precious grandchildren, and flying his airplane. Ignazio obtained his private pilot license in 1972, and throughout the years he served on the board of directors of the Brandon Flying Club in a number of capacities, including president. He was also a founding member of the Civil Air Search and Rescue Association (CASARA). Ignazio is survived by his beloved wife, Salvatora (nee Sarraino) daughters, Josie (Ken Bessant), Patricia (Gary Buckley), Anna-Maria (Dale Whelpton), and Angelina (Bruce White) grandchildren, Parker and Elise Buckley, Luke and Clark Whelpton, and Colin White; brothers, Vincenzo (Josie), Salvatore (Carla), and Giuseppe (Diane) sisters, Josie (Bill Martin), Angie (Francesco Porco), Maria (Alfredo Maida), and Anna (John Mooibroek) numerous nieces and nephews; and his mother, Giuseppa.
