March 1, 1932 - January 4, 2000 Suddenly, John joined his adored wife, Louise Gail Adamson (nee Faulder) and son Michael. He will be missed by Barbara (nee Adamson) and Ross Tallman, and his grandchildren, Adam, Jacob and Alyson; Jan Adamson and Richard Vieregge and grandchildren, Kate and Timothy; Carol (nee Adamson) and David Hill and grandchildren, Riley and Jesse; James Adamson, Shelagh Adamson and Paul Moser, and Gavin Adamson; his sister Josephine Adamson and her family. John made a major contribution to the development of psychiatry in Manitoba and in Canada for over four decades - as a teacher of undergraduate and graduate students, as a researcher, and as a clinician. He was awarded many research grants, published more than 30 scientific papers and supervised 20 Med students. He was devoted to his many patients, and they to him. After graduating from the University of Manitoba in 1956 with an MD degree, John specialized in the areas of neurology, internal medicine, and psychiatry. His training took him through the Toronto and Montreal General Hospitals, and through the Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY. He devoted his career to the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg, and to the University of Manitoba. He was awarded full professor in 1986, and senior scholar upon his retirement in 1995. John was instrumental in developing community support for people with mental illness, and especially took a lead role in the development of the Manitoba Mental Health Research Foundation in the early 70s. John was passionate about his wife. He was a committed and understanding father. He felt a spiritual connection with nature, and spent many hours in quiet observation, but he also enjoyed his NFL football. A memorial service will be held at Thomson Funeral Home, Friday, January 7 at 1:00 p.m. A gathering of friends will follow at 3:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Canadian Mental Health Association, 432 Ellice Avenue, Winnipeg Branch, Wpg, MB, R3B 1Y4.
