GOLDIE LAVEMAN After a brief illness, Goldie Laveman passed away on Wednesday, January 5, 2000 at the age of 82 at Seven Oaks General Hospital. Goldie was predeceased by her father, Samuel (1948), mother Charna (1963), and sister, Ytta (1919). She is survived by her sister Anne (John Pollock), and brothers Charlie (Esther) and Earle (Phyllis). Also surviving Goldie are her nephews and nieces Zailig Pollock (Didi), Nuchum Pollock (Jennifer Motha), Shmee Pollock (Terry), Rosalind Laveman, Lola (Albert Kakon), Suzanne (Moti Perl), Sheldon Laveman, Ruthie Laveman (Judy Plotkin) and many great nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her close friend Gussie Hohenberg. Goldie was born in Winnipeg in 1917 and graduated from Kelvin High School where she excelled in academic studies, athletics and many other activities. She worked in the Civil Service at the Fort Osborne Barracks for the Canadian Armed Forces during the Second World War. Goldie then spent the balance of her working life as a career business woman. She first worked as office manager for the Western Jewish News and later as manager for Cliffords Ladies Wear until her retirement in 1978. Among her many interests, Goldie accumulated a large library covering a wide variety of topics such as modern literature and biographies. She had a lifelong interest in gardening, and her apples won West Kildonan horticultural awards. She also mastered painting, petit point, baking and bridge. During her middle years, Goldie travelled to New York and Europe a number of times and always enjoyed the different cultures, museums and theatres. Goldie loved to spend time reading, watching television and visiting with her nieces and nephews over countless Sunday dinners. She was quick to share her wisdom and love and took much pleasure in the accomplishments of her "kids". Goldie was known as a "no-nonsense" woman who spoke her mind and would not tolerate gossip or pretense. Together with her wonderful sense of humour, these traits earned Goldie deep respect and admiration among her many friends and family throughout her lifetime. She had great determination and always excelled at whatever she did. After a brief hospitalization in 1998, Goldie moved into the Sharon Home where she quickly became a favourite with both staff and residents. She always looked forward to visits from her family and friends. Funeral services were held on Friday, January 7 at the Beth Israel Synagogue followed by interment at the Shaarey Zedek Cemetery. Rabbi Alan Green officiated. Pallbearers were Goldies nephews Zailig Pollock, Nuchum Pollock, Shmee Pollock, Sheldon Laveman and family friends David Pesochin and Bill Weissmann. Special thanks to the nurses and aides on the 4th floor of the Sharon Home. Donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
