Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJAROSLAW (JERRY) GABA With deepest sorrow we announce the passing of our dearly beloved husband, father and grandfather, Jaroslaw Gaba on January the 8th, 2000 at Seven Oaks Hospital. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 45 years, Louise; sons, Donald (Erin), granddaughter Megan of Winnipeg, Man. and Robert (Charlotte) of Victoria, B.C.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Joyce and Edward Kost and Annette and Anton Dyck, numerous relatives and friends in Ukraine, Poland, Canada, U.S.A., and England. Jaroslaw was born August 12, 1922 in the Village of Kuty, Western Ukraine to John and Anna (Gogosha). He received his early education in Brody, later in Lviv, and graduated from the Teachers Seminary in Yaroslaw. In 1943 he joined the First Division of the Ukrainian National Army and fought in the battle of Brody. He was decorated with the Iron Cross. From 1945-1947 he was a prisoner of war in Rimini, Italy under the jurisdiction of the English Army. There he taught in regimental and craft schools as well as being editor of the regimental newspapers. In 1947 he was transferred to England where he worked with the camp management until his release on January 14, 1949. He came to Canada in 1951 and worked at Cowin Steep Co. Ltd. until his retirement in 1987. He married Louise Macuch in 1954. He was a member of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church; brotherhood of the Ukrainian Army Association of Ridna Shkola, Ukrainian Cultural and Educational Centre (Oseredok) and a sympathizer of Ukrainian Nationalistic Institutions, wrote historical articles in various newspapers under the pen name of "Slawko". He led an exemplary, simple life with family, close friends, not forgetting his family in Ukraine. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Anna; sisters, Evhenia (Anton) Yakubowsky; nephew, Lubomyr and Stephania (Volodomyr) Palanycia, all of Ukraine; brother-in-law and sister-in-law William and Betty Melesko of Victoria, B.C. Prayers will be sung 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 11 at Korban Funeral Chapel, 907 Main Street. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 12 at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, 737 Bannerman Avenue with a Basilian Father officiating. Interment to follow in Holy Family Cemetery. Ukrainian Combatants will form an Honour Guard. In lieu of flowers, if so desired, donations may be made in his memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 301-352 Donald Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3B 2H8 or the St. Nicholas parish Preservation/Maintenance Fund. The family thanks all the staff of Seven Oaks Hospital, Dr. D. Haligowski and Dr. A. Chan, and all his devoted home care givers of the past year.
