MICHAEL HORBUL With great sadness, the family announces the peaceful passing of their beloved uncle Michael Horbul, on January 9, 2000 at the age of 88 at Emerson Hospital. Uncle Mike was born March 18, 1911 on the family farm in Stuartburn, MB, the son of Wasylyna and Stephen Horbul. On November 19, 1944, he married Jean Probizanski, his beloved wife and friend for 47 years until her passing in 1991. Together they operated a farm and general store in Stuartburn until they moved to Emerson in 1972. Uncle Mike had many hobbies, among them wood carving, gardening and reading country western novels. He was a lover of the outdoors who took great pleasure watching wild life, fishing, and picking wild berries and mushrooms. Uncle Mike was predeceased by his parents; wife Jean; three brothers, Harry, William and Alex Horbul; and three sisters, Maria Sawchuk, Hafia Matichuk and Annie Nawolski. He is survived by one sister Nellie Sokolyk of Vita, MB; and leaves to cherish his memory a large extended family including many nieces and nephews from Manitoba, Ontario, Saskatchewan, British Columbia and the United States. Uncle Mike was a kind, sensitive man blessed with a wonderful sense of humour and a gift for conversation. Although without children in his lifetime, towering "Uncle Shorty" touched the lives of many of his nieces and nephews as deeply as a father figure. He will forever hold a cherished place in our hearts. The family wishes to express their gratitude to the doctors and nurses of the Emerson Hospital, and the home care workers who helped care for Uncle Mike as his health declined. The family owes a deep debt of gratitude to Shela Beaulieu for her unwavering friendship and support which so often lifted Uncle Mikes spirits, and also to George Gushuliak for lending a helping hand whenever Uncle Mike needed it. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 15 at 10:00 a.m. at the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church in Stuartburn, with Fr. Ihor Royik officiating.
