NEIL (CORNELIUS W.) SCHMIDT Neil (Cornelius W.) of Winnipeg, Man., beloved husband of Anne Schmidt, after a long courageous battle with cancer, went home to be with the Lord on January 14, 2000 at the age of 78. Neil was born July 14, 1921 on the family farm near the town of Gretna, Man. As a young man Neil left the Gretna area to work at St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg, as an orderly for tuberculosis patients. In Winnipeg, he met Anne Dormer and they married on September 22, 1945. Together they raised two daughters, while Neil worked 17 years in his own trucking delivery business, and later as a purchasing agent for Reimer Express Lines until his retirement in 1986. Neil was a man devoted to his wife and family and also to his Christian faith. Church activities were always a big part of family life, and Neil served at different times at church chairman, as a deacon, and on many boards and committees. He was an avid reader and an enthusiastic fisherman who loved to participate in that sport with family and friends. He and Anne shared a love of travel that lead to many memorable trips all over Canada, U.S.A., Europe and countless trips to visit the grandchildren! Neil was the youngest of nine children, born to Maria and Jacob Schmidt. He was predeceased by both of his parents; brothers, Henry, Jacob and Peter and sisters, Gertrude, Mary, Katherine and an infant sister. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years Anne; daughters, Lenora (Nicholas Goida) and Cora Lynne (Roland Schneider) grandchildren, Christopher, Brenda (Brian), Jonathan and Angela; great-grandson Austin; sister, Eva Rempel, close friends, John and Mary Janzen as well as many special sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Neils gentle spirit and great sense of humour endeared him to many. He also inspired and encouraged us with his faith and trust in God through many times of great personal challenge and physical difficulty. He will be sadly missed, but always remembered by all of his family and friends. The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks for all the care and compassion given by Dr. Crow, Dr. Harlos and Dr. Daenick, as well as all the staff on the Palliative Care Unit, St. Boniface Hospital, who Neil described as his "own personal angels". Viewing to be held Tuesday, January 18 from 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. at Grace Bible Church, 366 Oakwood Ave., Winnipeg, with a short devotional time at 8:00 p.m. A service to celebrate Neils life will be held the next day Wednesday, January 19 at 10:30 a.m. at Grace Bible Church with Dr. Chuck Nichols officiating. Interment will follow at Edenberg Cemetery at 3:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Boniface General Hospital Research Foundation, designated for the Palliative Care Unit, 409 Tache Ave. Rm. D1003, Winnipeg, MB, R2H 9Z9. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." John 3:16. "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me." Psalm 23:4.
