MARION IRENE SAYDAK Peacefully, with her family at her side, Marion Irene Saydak, aged 45, passed away at the Health Sciences Centre on Tuesday, January 18, 2000. Marion will be lovingly remembered by her husband Alan; daughter Megan; son Patrick; brother-in-law Richard and wife Maria, children, Kathy, Laura. Her three cats Coco, Penny, and 599 will miss her kind care and touch. She is also survived her sister Geraldine and husband David, children, Alison, Aden, and Aaron; a brother; and her parents. Marion was born in Saskatchewan on June 5, 1954. Her family settled in Winnipeg where she met her husband Alan. They were married July 14, 1973, and settled in Southdale where they had two children, Megan and Patrick. Marion entered nursing school in 1972, and completed her nursing diploma from the Winnipeg General Hospital. Pursuing a keen academic interest, she went on to complete her Bachelor of Nursing Degree from the University of Manitoba in 1985, and then completed her Master of Nursing in 1991. Her thesis topic was: The Perceptions of Mothers with an Infant Receiving Neonatal Care: A Descriptive Study. Marion had a long and varied nursing career. She started at the Health Sciences Centre on the Labour and Delivery as well as both Ward E6 and the ENT ward. She then worked at St. Boniface General Hospital on 2B-ENT, and 3B Maternal Child wards. She was a Quality Monitoring Nurse Auditor and Nursing Supervisor. She worked at Youville Clinic in a term position. At the University of Manitoba, Marion took on many roles. She was a Research Assistant, Seminar Leader Level 2, Summer Session Instructor, Lecturer/Course Leader, Lecturer/Faculty Advisor, and up to the present a lecturer (Part Time Term Nil Appointment). From 1992 to the present, Marion worked at Manitoba Health. Some of her roles included; Analyst, Womens Health Branch; Senior Consultant, Acute and Ambulatory Care; Consultant, Program Development Branch. Most recently she was involved in the following programs: Palliative Care, Cancer, Audiology, Long Term Care, and Womens Health. Marion co-chaired the Nursing Recruitment and Retention Program, and was a Manitoba Representative, providing national representation to the Cervical Cancer Program Network, and CIHI Partnership Working Group. Marion received many awards and scholarships including: the Canadian Nursing Foundation Fellowship, and a St. Boniface General Hospital bursary. Marion co-published many articles and presented these papers at many sites in Canada and England. Her research experience included: article reviewer, the Canadian Journal of Public Health; Co-Investigator, History of Nursing in Manitoba; and a member of the Manuscript Review Panel, The Canadian Nurse. Her membership in professional organizations include: Canadian Association for the History of Nursing, Long Range Planning Committee (CAHN), Manitoba Association of the History of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau, Faculty of Nursing Alumni Association, and Canadian Nurses Foundation. Marion also did a lot of community service throughout the years. Even with her busy schedule, Marion loved to entertain. Her house was always full of people trying out her main courses, and her many dainties. She also loved her gardening around the house, and was an avid reader of murder mysteries. Marion thought she was in seventh heaven when she toured the Coronation Street Studio in England. Marions kind spirit and enthusiasm for life touched everyone she met. Her generosity and energy will be greatly missed by family and friends. Her family would like to thank all the staff of the Radiology, Emergency, and D4 departments at the Health Sciences Centre for their kind and compassionate care. Prayers will be said at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, January 21, 2000 in St. Bernadette Roman Catholic Parish, 820 Cottonwood, in Windsor Park. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 22, also in the St. Bernadette Parish, with the Rev. Fr. Gerry Ward presiding both services.
