ANNE WARKENTIN March 10, 1921 - January 19, 2000 Peacefully, Wednesday January 19, 2000 at Steinbach Bethesda Hospital, at the age of 78 years, surrounded by family and friends, our Mom went home to be with the Lord. Mom was born in Tiege, Russia on March 10, 1921 to Johann and Anna Friesenn. She emigrated to Canada with her parents in 1926. After a brief stay in the Marquette area, the family settled in the village of Grunthal in 1927. They purchased a farm near Shoensee in 1930, where they farmed until 1945, when they moved back to Grunthal. Mom worked at the lunch counter at Guenthers Store in Grunthal, where one of her regular customers turned out to be her future husband. On October 22, 1950, she married Dave Warkentin, with whom she shared 44 years. They became caretakers of the church, where they also resided for two years. They bought a house on Main Street in 1952. Adversity struck in 1953 when Mom contracted tuberculosis. The one and a half year separation from her family was very difficult, but her inner strength and determination helped see her through it. In 1961, they built a house on Ash Street, which was the family home for 37 years. Mom worked part time in the Grunthal Post Office for many years while raising a family. She was also very involved in the church, especially the Maria Martha Verein. Mom enjoyed serving, patchwork blankets for MCC and making quilts. Upon retirement, Mom added the MCC Thrift Shop to her volunteer activities. Her organizational skills were put to good use and her dedication was greatly appreciated. She thoroughly enjoyed her various roles. In November 1998 she sold the family home and moved into Oakview Manor. She was very happy in her short time there, making many new friends while completing many a jigsaw puzzle. Mom leaves to cherish her memory: son John (Kate, grandchildren, David and Trisha) daughter Linda; son Ron; sister Elizabeth Friesen; brother Abram Friesen; supportive family: Margaret Warkentin, Irene Warkentin, Werner and Helen Warkentin, Peter and Marlies Thiessen, John and Erna Warkentin, Peter and Lisa Warkentin, Alf and Ursula Warkentin, John and Hedy Friesen, Arnold and Agnes Foth, Henry and Marge Friesen, Abe and Irene Friesen, Margaret Boschman, George and Adina Boschman, Len and Thorlene Friesen; numerous nieces and nephews and many friends. She was predeceased by husband Dave in 1994; son Edward in infancy; brother John; sister Greta. Many thanks to the 2nd floor nursing staff at Bethesda Hospital for their compassion and caring. Funeral will be held Sunday, January 23 2:00 p.m. at Elim Mennonite Church, Grunthal. Interment at Grunthal Cemetery. Visitation Saturday, January 22, 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Loewen Funeral Chapel, Steinbach. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Manitoba Cancer Society or MCC. Arrangements entrusted to Loewen Funeral Chapel of Steinbach. 204-326-1351.
