Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMARIA TOEWS (nee FUNK) Maria Toews of Bethel Place, aged 93, died in Winnipeg on Monday, January 24, 2000 with her daughter, Frances, by her side. She was predeceased by her husband Ertman in 1979; and by brothers, John, Peter, Abe, Jake; and sisters, Katherina and Elizabeth. Survived by her daughter Frances (Nick Andrusiak) grandchildren, John (Rebecca), Peter (Charlotte), Maria (Isaac), and Michael; and by great-grandson Roy, born March 1999, son of John and Rebecca. She is also survived by her sisters, Helen and Margaret; and numerous nieces and nephews. Maria was born May 12, 1906 on the family farm near Randolph, Manitoba, (formerly Chortitz). She was the daughter of Abraham Funk and Elizabeth Peters, Mennonite pioneers. Maria and Ertman were married on December 25, 1942 and lived on Lorette Avenue, Winnipeg for many years. After the death of her husband, Maria moved to Bethel Place when it was built 20 years ago. She valued her independence and personal privacy and was proud that she was able to manage on her own until her illness. She contributed to the life of her community with her memories and by volunteering for several years as the afternoon coffee coordinator. Maria was a woman of intellectual prowess who regretted not having the opportunity of an education. She poured her energies into complex needlecrafts, knitting, and baking. She made certain that her grandchildren had educational opportunities and were well supplied with cookies. Our mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother will be deeply missed but well-remembered. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 29 at Bethel Mennonite Church, 870 Carter Ave. at 11:00 a.m. Viewing at 10:30 a.m. Pastor David Epp-Stobbe officiating.
