SOPHIE HOLOD Our Mother, Babka and Great Babka of Stonewall, MB, peacefully left this earth on January 25, 2000 in Stonewall at the golden age of 96 years. Sophie was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Ted Holod in 1982. Her life is celebrated by her family: daughter-in-law Jean of Stonewall; her three children, daughter Olga, her husband Mike Hanchar of Calgary and their three children; son Modiste and Shirley of Stonewall and their five children; son Nestor and Marie of Winnipeg and their two children; also 17 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters, Evelyn Tkachuk of Winnipeg and Anne and husband Bill Shmigelsky of Winnipeg; as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Michael and Petrunka Stachiw of Vita, MB; sister Mary of Edmonton, AB; two sons, Bill (April 1999) and Maurice (September 1999) of Stonewall. Sophie was born on September 21, 1903 in Austria to Michael and Petrunka Stachiw, being the oldest of four children. Following her marriage to Ted Holod in November of 1921 they moved to Minneapolis, USA where Ted worked for the railway. In 1926 they moved back to Manitoba and lived in the Rosa area working very hard together on their farm for 18 years. Then they moved to Stonewall and continued to work hard till their retirement. "Babka" as she was affectionately known to her family, excelled as a cook and took great pride in presenting a meal to her guests. She was happiest in having a houseful of family sit down to a delicious meal and leave contented. She was a kind and generous lady. Sophie took pride in keeping a lovely home that was adorned by beautiful flowers and a bountiful garden. While her eyesight was good she enjoyed to sew, crochet, read and watch T.V. A private family funeral service will be held in the MacKenzie Funeral Chapel, Stonewall with Rev. J. Miles officiating. Interment will follow in the Stonewall Cemetery. The Family wishes to express their thanks and appreciation to the Staff at Rosewood Lodge for their love and tender care during Sophies days there. If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to Rosewood Lodge Stonewall, MB. VICHNAYA PAMYAT MacKenzie Funeral Home, Stonewall in care of the arrangements.
