MRS. BRIGADIER EDITH L. SHAVER A soldier of Jesus Christ, Mrs. Shaver ceased her earthly warfare and was Promoted to Glory on Monday, January 24, 2000 from Oakview Place Personal Care Home. She leaves to remember her with deep love and affection her son Ross, daughter-in-law Connie, grandchildren Mercedes and Ryan, great-grandson Jacob, several nieces and a nephew. Born in Aberdeen Scotland, Mrs. Shaver came to Canada with her family, settling in Toronto in 1924. She was a soldier of the Salvation Army Toronto Temple, a member in the Songster Brigade and a leader in the Salvation Army Life Saving Guards. In 1939, having heard the Call from God, she entered the Salvation Army College for Officers. She was commissioned Captain in 1940 and was stationed in Stellarton NS, Westville NS, Kemptville ON and Napanee ON. In 1943, she proceeded overseas and served with the Salvation Army War Services providing support for the Canadian troops in England and Belgium. While overseas she was married to her life partner, Captain William Shaver, at the Salvation Army Barking Corps, London England. After the war, she and her husband served as field officers carrying on the work of God and the Salvation Army for 25 years in Brampton ON, Simcoe ON, St. John NB, Ellice Ave. Winnipeg, New Westminster BC and Harbour Light Corps Winnipeg. They spent a further 8 years in the Salvation Army Public Relations Dept. in Winnipeg, Regina and Calgary. Upon retiring, they continued for 4 more years in the Family Welfare Dept. in Calgary and 4 years as visiting officers at the Winnipeg Citadel Corps. Throughout her life, Mrs. Shaver blessed all with whom she came in contact especially through her beautiful singing. She served her Lord faithfully throughout her life. Her great love for people and her sincere desire to uphold Christian principles will ever be remembered by those who had close associations with her. The family wishes to thank all those who cared for and comforted Nana in her later years. This would include her various Home Care workers, the staff at Grace Hospital and most recently the staff at Oakview Place Personal Care Home. Funeral Service will be held on Monday, January 31 at 2:00 p.m. at the Salvation Army Heritage Park Corps, 825 School Road, Lt-Col. R. Moulton officiating. Interment at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens. If friends so desire, donations may be made to the Salvation Army Southlands Community Church (formerly Winnipeg Citadel Corps) Unit 203 - 2969 Pembina Hwy, Winnipeg R3T 2H5 or the Canadian Diabetes Association, 102 - 310 Broadway, Winnipeg R3C 0S6.
