JOHN HENRY (JACK) McPHADEN Peacefully on January 2, 2000, Jack passed away at St. Boniface Hospital, at the age of 81. Jack was born on January 28, 1918, at Hamiota, Man. He was predeceased by his parents, Hugh Allan McPhaden and Mary (Thompson) his sister, Jean Morton, and by a brother, Roy, who died in infancy. Jack is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Pat (Saunders) by his children, Carol McPhaden (Roger Kingsley), Barbara Bater (Brian), and Allan (Audrey) and by six grandchildren, Michael and Lisa McPhaden, Christopher and Jared Bater, and Alexander and Lauren Elizabeth McPhaden. Jack is also survived by his brother, Frank (Vera) and sisters, Marjory Henry and Grace Rose. Jack served in the RCAF from 1941 to 1945, rising to the rank of Flight Lieutenant in Coastal Command. Stationed in England, he saw active flight service over Europe as a wireless operator. He met his beloved wife, Patricia Saunders, while in England, where they married; he then brought his English Rose home to Manitoba after demobilization. Jack worked briefly for the Veterans Land Administration in 1946, and then bought a farm in the Oak River area, which he worked until 1959. He sold his farm and returned to the Veterans Land Administration, transferring to Morden. He transferred to the Farm Credit Corporation in 1962, and was transferred to their regional offices in Winnipeg in 1964, when Jack and Pat took up residence in their family home in Fort Garry. Jack retired from the Farm Credit Corporation in 1981 at the age of 64, and operated McPhaden Agricultural Appraisals and Consulting out of his home for the next ten years. He had joined the Appraisal Institute of Canada in 1960, becoming an accredited appraiser in 1974. He was chair of the Winnipeg Chapter in 1980, and served as the rural liaison officer for ten years. He also served on the Board of the Indian Agricultural Development Corporation from 1986 to 1992. Jack was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge, joining in 1945; he became District Deputy Grand Master in 1957. Jack joined the Oak River Scout troop as a Scoutmaster in 1947, and remained active with the troop until 1959. During this time, he organized Oak River District, becoming the first District Commissioner. Once in Morden, he organized the La Verendrye Trail District, also becoming its first District Commissioner. After moving to Fort Garry, Jack was involved with the Scouting movement within Pembina District and at the provincial level; he was an Honorary Member of both Pembina District and Manitoba Council at the time of his passing. In 1997, Jack received his 50-year pin for adult leadership with the Scouts, and was notified that he had been awarded Scoutings highest volunteer honour, the Silver Wolf; he received this honour from Chief Scout and Governor General Romeo LeBlanc at an investiture at Rideau Hall in November, 1998. Jack also served as Assistant Provincial Commissioner, chair of the Provincial Honours and Awards Committee, and as Guildmaster of the 11th Baden-Powell Guild. Jack was an active life member of the War Time Pilots Association, and served on their Board. A memorial service in celebration of Jacks life will be held at Fort Garry United Church, 800 Point Road, Winnipeg, at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 8. Jacks grandchildren will be honorary pallbearers. Uniforms welcome. Interment will take place privately at a later time.
