FREDERICK JOHN (JACK) MELLOW On Friday, January 28, 2000, Jack Mellow, beloved husband of Gladys, passed away at Deer Lodge Centre at the age of 87. Jack was born on April 4, 1912 to Fred and Minnie Mellow and grew up on the family farm. He joined the RCAF in 1940 and served overseas in England and France as an aero-engine mechanic until his discharge in 1945. He then returned to Sanford, marrying Gladys Rhynard on March 11, 1946 and establishing a home. That same year, he began working at the Sanford Co-op, first at the oilshed, then in the hardware department, and finally as manager. In 1977 he retired and thereafter was able to pursue his love of travel, taking trips to Florida, California, Hawaii, British Columbia and Alaska. His last few years were spent in residence at Deer Lodge Centre, where he and Gladys celebrated their 50th anniversary in 1996. In addition to his family he loved the Spitfires that he had worked on while in the air force and frequently reminisced about them. As a young man he had spent much of his time in the woods and developed a fondness for tall trees that lasted all his life, and some of his happiest moments were spent in the redwood forests of B.C. He was predeceased by his father and mother; his brother Bill in 1978 and his sister Irene in 1996, and is survived by wife Gladys; daughter Lynne (Stewart McEwen) and granddaughter Sarah; son Lloyd, and daughter Muriel (Tad Mitsui). The family would like to thank the staff at Deer Lodge Centre for all their care and kindness while Jack was a resident there. Funeral service will be at Sanford United Church at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 2 and interment will follow at Sanford Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either the Deer Lodge Foundation at 2109 Portage Ave., Winnipeg, MB, R3J 0L3, or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba at 301-352 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB, R3B 2H8. "Per Ardua ad Astra" - "Through Adversity to the Stars." Thomson Funeral Chapel in care of arrangements, 669 Broadway. 783-7211.
