SAMUEL HAWKINS 1923 - 2000 Peacefully in his sleep on January 29, 2000, Samuel passed away in the St. Boniface Hospital at the age of 76. He is survived by his children, Janice Hawkins and (Thom Williams) of Pleasant Hill, Iowa, Sherry and (Dennis) Gabel of Olathe, Kansas, Ava Hawkins and (Paige Clark) of Vancouver, BC, Hal (Hawkins) Pryor of Detroit, Mich.; grandchildren, Luke and Rosa Gabel, Kansas; sister Martha Bodkin of West Vancouver, BC; nieces and nephews, Howard and (Marguerite) Brooker of Calgary, AB, Harold and (Audrey) Brooker of Port Moody, BC, and Peggy and (Ronald) Fee of Vancouver, BC. Samuel was predeceased by his wife Lena in 1967; his parents, Samuel and Annie; his brothers, Christopher and Robert, his sister Violet (Brooker) and his nephew Ross Bodkin. Samuel was born on June 25, 1923 in Lipton, SK. He attended school at the Saskatchewan School for the Deaf in Saskatoon. Samuel was a tailor and was also employed by Canada Post as a letter sorter for 30 years. He was a proud member of the Winnipeg Community Centre of the Deaf. Samuel enjoyed his Fridays at the Deaf Center of Manitoba where he socialized with his friends and played cards. He will be missed by those he shared his time with. The family wishes to extend a special thanks to all the staff at the St. Boniface Hospital Emergency Ward, the R.C.M.P., and Elsie Semchuk for their care and compassion. The viewing will be held on Saturday, February 5 from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon in Thomson Funeral Chapels, 669 Broadway. A memorial service will follow at 2:30 p.m. at The Deaf Centre of Manitoba, 285 Pembina Hwy. Refreshments will follow the service. Sign Language Interpretation will be provided.
