JOHN GARTH COMACK It was Gods will that on February 2, 2000 John Comack passed away peacefully in his sleep. John was born in Glasgow, Scotland on December 17, 1925. He immigrated to Canada with his family in 1930. (He called Winnipeg home his whole life.) He served with the RCAF during the Second World War. He joined the City of Winnipeg Police on January 3, 1950 and retired from there as a Staff Sergeant after 33 years of service. No one was prouder that he to serve the public as a Police Officer. He is a long-time member of Knox United Church, the Three Pillars Lodge and the St. Andrews Society. He also enjoyed the camaraderie of his fellow police officers through membership in the Police Veterans Association. After his retirement John and Lorraine enjoyed their cottage at Winnipeg Beach and vacations in Florida and Hawaii. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 50 years, Lorraine and his children, Gail and Randy, Gary and Susan, Colleen and Louis and Valerie. He also leaves what he considered his most precious gifts, his grandchildren, Joel, Nicole, Allison, Jennifer, Trevor, Stacey, Amber, Christian, Dielle and Ashley. He is predeceased by his parents, Hugh and Mary; brother Jimmy and brothers-in-law, Jack Morton and Jack Stephens. He is survived by his brother Hugh and wife Agnes; his sisters, Mary and Margaret and sister-in-law Vi, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Dad as we remember him. MY HERO As I ponder the love that I saw in his eyes, A Godly love, given without compromise... I recall many times that he stood by my side, And prodded me on with great vigor and pride. His voice ever confident, firm and yet fair, Always speaking with patience, tenderness and care. The power and might of his hands was so sure, I knew there was nothing we couldnt endure. Its true, a few others provided insight, Yet, he laid the foundation that kept me upright. Hes the grandest of men to have lived on this earth, Although hes not royal by stature or birth. Hes a man of great dignity, honour and strength. His merits are noble, and of admirable length. Hes far greater than all other men that I know, Hes my Dad, hes my mentor, my friend and hero. Pasie as the grandchildren remember him. PRELUDE TO PAS Peppermints in his pocket And a toonie for me He had a special way Of making you feel warm inside Sand toys at the beach And walks to get his paper He always listened And never judged >From behind that beautiful smile No one would help but melt The rocking chair was his And the magical toys His basement contained Were fun for hours The Jumbo Puzzle from the Free Press And a front row seat At piano recitals He always had a big warm hug With more built up to spare Those who knew him Knew him well. He could look at you And you knew he was listening For those who never knew him That really is a shame Never a man more magical Who had so much love to give Vanilla was his favourite ice cream And his meaning of life Was "to be loved" I learned this in a school Assignment requiring me to Interview a fascinating person His life meaning has surely come true I couldnt imagine a man More loved, respected and admired Who kept every picture I ever drew No matter how silly or childish Ill never forget you, Pas For as long as I live With peppermints in his pocket And a toonie all for me. Cremation has already taken place. A service to celebrate Johns life will be held Saturday, February 5 at 11:00 a.m. at Knox United Church, Edmonton and QuAppelle with Rev. Bruce Bailey officiating. The family would like to thank the police officers, Fire Department First Reponders and the ambulance team for their compassion towards the family at this time.
