BERTHA MUNDAY Passed away peacefully at St. Boniface Hospital on Thursday, February 3, 2000, she was born in a small community outside of Manchester, England yet spent most of her life in Canada being raised in Kamsack, SK where she obtained her Teachers Certificate and taught in the rural community of Hudson Bay Junction where she travelled to and from school on a horse and cutter. She met Albert Munday in Kamsack and then moved to Winnipeg where she taught in the Winnipeg School Division Number 1 for many years, she is best known at Gladstone, Lord Roberts, Earl Grey and Fort Rouge Schools. Bertha was an active member of the Prairie Flower Lodge and the Order of Eastern Star. She and her dear Albert were lifelong members of St. Lukes Anglican Church where they enjoyed, with their daughter Maureen, many family joyous experiences over the years. Undoubtedly one of Berthas great loves was her compulsion to travel. She and Albert ventured to Mexico many times, and following Alberts untimely death she travelled across Europe, safaried the continent of Africa and explored Australia and New Zealand. One of Berthas great strengths was her ability to enjoy great friends over her many years, and often this included trips to Mexico, England and Costa Rica. She shared wonderful memories with Joan Morrison, Betty Dunn, Hazel Bannerman, and Hazel Snyder, as well as her special friend Aurise Crozier. Berthas fondest times though were spent with Aurise travelling to Winnipeg Beach for countless weekend adventures. Certainly, Aurise has been a kind, generous, and unfailing companion throughout her life. Travelling to Winnipeg Beach with Bertha, and all her walking equipment was indeed a challenge. The highlight in Berthas life arrived in her latter years with the arrival of her two precious grandchildren Paul and Sonja. Every phone call started with how are my kids? She loved those shopping trips in Winnipeg and spoiled her kids rotten. Many lunches were spent at Eatons Grill Room and dinners at The Beef Eater and Maximes. When Bertha was feeling low Paul and Sonja could always put a twinkle in her eye. Another great twinkle in Berthas eye was often put there by John Restall when she received his phone call to be ready for a pick up to Leaside Beach. Be ready Bertha there are no stops and well be 2 hours door to door. Bertha was always ready at the front door. From the moment she arrived at Leaside she had great times with her extended family Jan & John, Julie & Jennie, and Kristen & Johnny. Many laughs and great times were shared with the Restalls over the years. Two other jewels in Berthas life were her son-in-law Glenn and his brother Eric Sigurdson. Eric, Wendy, Stefan and Elin were a great joy to Bertha as well as Glen and Erics sister Elaine. Up at Leaside, Bertha loved the great times with her lifelong friends Betty and Ingi Ingaldson, the Mayor of Leaside. Ingi could always get Bertha laughing and Bertha thought of them as her own family. Her memories at Leaside included wonderful times with Chris and Lenore Good, Brian and Lyla Thorarinson, Pat and Gerry Trottier and Jan and Kevin Coates. Over the years Bertha wanted to be the first to arrive at a party and was certainly the last to leave it. A great loss in Berthas life was the untimely death of her uncle Ernie. He and auntie Helen were the source of strength to Berthas family after Alberts passing. Ken and Liz Munday, and their family, Jeff, Jerry and Michael have been a great joy to Bertha. Kens sisters, Eleanor and Pat and their families have also shared a special place in Berthas heart. Bertha spent a lot of time over the years with the Munday family and fondly remembered the great experiences with Huey and George, Nellie and Norman and Art and Irene, as well as their families. Bertha will be greatly missed by her many friends and family, especially her only child Maureen, Glenn as well as her two jewels Paul and Sonja. A special thanks to her old friend, Dr. Kevin Coates for the joy and personal care he gave to Bertha. The family wont forget the kindnesses of the staff at the Quest Inn. Honourary pallbearers are Jeff, Jerry and Michael Munday. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Lukes Anglican Church, Stradbrook and Nassau. Services to be held at Neil Bardal Inc., 984 Portage Ave., Aubrey Street entrance on Sunday, February 6 at 1:00 p.m. NEIL BARDAL INC. 949-2200
