Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryEDITH PHYLLIS BACKMAN (nee Barton) On February 7, 2000, Phyllis passed away peacefully in the St. Boniface Hospital. Phyllis was predeceased by her beloved husband Edward in 1959. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Jocelyn (Bruce) Samson; sons, Allan (Carole) and Phil (Anne) grandchildren, Erika (Mark), Andrea (Gian), Cody, Barbara and Robbie; step-grandchildren, Bruce (Sylvia), Ian (Lynne) and Hillary; and great-grandchildren Megan and Rebecca. Phyllis was born in Moosomin, Saskatchewan in 1907. She was an ardent believer in the value of education and she had a life-long commitment to learning. She graduated from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Arts degree and taught in schools throughout Saskatchewan and in Winnipeg. She loved the beauty of life and enriched the lives of all her friends with her cheerful spirit and her many acts of kindness. Phyllis enjoyed almost ten years of life within The Wellington community and also loved her sojourns to Lake of the Woods and Phoenix. There will be a memorial service at 1:30 on Friday, February 11, in Thomson Funeral Chapel, 669 Broadway, with the Rev. Russell Wardell officiating, followed by a reception at The Wellington, 3161 Grant Avenue. The family would like to extend their sincerest thanks to Dr. Mauro Verelli for his extraordinary care and to the many fine nurses at the St. Boniface Hospital Ward 5B who treated Phyllis with such special kindness in her final days.
