EMILY ROMANIUK On February 8, 2000, Emily Romaniuk passed away at age 96. She was born in Western Ukraine and came to Canada at age 5 with her parents. They homsteaded in the Ledwyn area. Later she married Gus Romaniuk, author of "Taking Root in Canada", and settled in Riverton where they owned a store and in 1947 built the Sandy Bar Hotel. Emily was predeceased by her husband Gus in 1967 and her oldest son Harry in 1993. Mom will be missed by her two sons, Jim (Mary) of Riverton, Lawrence (Lillian) of Winnipeg and daughter-in-law Georgina of Riverton. Babas memory will also be cherised by her five grandsons, David of Riverton, Ross and Eugene of Winnipeg, Leon (Elaine) and Greg of Seattle. She is also survived by her brother James (Olive) Ladoski and her sister Stella Joba of Winnipeg; as well as nieces and nephews. Her family was very dear to her. God blessed Emily with a sound mind and the ability to maintain her independence by living in her own home until November, 1999, where she enjoyed the companionship of relatives and friends. Everyone was welcome at her home at any time and rarely left without something to eat. She felt proud to have belonged to the Riverton Womens Institute for many years and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. The family would like to thank all the Home Care personnel and the staff at the Hodgson Hospital for their concern and compassionate care. Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 11 at the Riverton-Hnausa Lutheran Church at 1:30 p.m. Student Pastor Susan Horton will officiate. Interment to follow at the Ukrainian Ledwyn Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Ross, David and Eugene Romaniuk, David Sumka, Ralph George and Jim Ladoski. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, in memory of Emily, donations may be made to the Ukrainian Ledwyn Cemetery in care of Bill Triska, Riverton, Man.
