Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMARTHA FISHER August 25, 1920 - February 7, 2000 Martha passed away suddenly at 1:17 a.m. on Monday, February 7, 2000 in the Swan Valley Hospital at the age of 79 years. Martha was born to Anna and Peter Schwartz on August 25, 1920 in Winnipeg, MB. She was raised on a small farm at Lee River, MB where she attended the district school. After completing school, she remained at home to work on the family farm. When she was 18, she married Edward Fisher. A short time after their marriage, they moved to Pointe du Bois, MB on the Winnipeg River where her husband was able to get a job with the Winnipeg City Hydro. As there were no company houses available at the time, their first home was a tent. After getting a house, they agreed to board local school teachers until a place of their own became available. They remained at Pointe du Bois for 33 years until her husband retired from his job as an operator with the City Hydro. Martha took great pride in her role as a housewife. She and her husband always maintained two homes. For many years they had the company home and the farm home. After their retirement, they had the Winnipeg home and the cabin on the Lee River where they spent most of their time for the next 14 years. Martha was very well known for her gardening skills, her wonderful cooking and canning abilities and her flair at creating and sewing. She was blessed with many good friends and the door was always open to all for good meals and fun. Marthas parents were both very musically skilled and therefore she grew up with a love and appreciation of music. She and her husband were regulars at the country dances and they also would dance at home as a pastime that they both enjoyed. Coming from Latvian parents, she knew several good Latvian songs which she liked to share. Four years after the passing of her husband, Martha moved to Swan River, MB to live with her family. She enjoyed living along a river once again, her garden and flowers and the love of her family. She was predeceased by her mother and father; her husband Edward after 53 years of marriage, and her only younger brother Art. She leaves to mourn her passing, her only daughter Donna Richer and husband Serge; two grandchildren, Danielle and Serge Kevin and his wife Jenny; also her only sister Wilma Osis of Swan River (formerly of Lac du Bonnet, MB). A celebration of her life will be held at the Lutheran Church of The Cross in Lac du Bonnet, at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 12, with Pastor Reimer officiating. The active pallbearers will be Roland Hodge, Bruce Williams, Bill Sarapu, Glen Romanow, Bryant Hodge and Scottie Wood. Interment will be at the Lee River Cemetery. Swan Valley Funeral Services Ltd. of Swan River and Russell Funeral Home of Beausejour are entrusted with the arrangements.
