KATHARINE ISABEL McDOLE Katharine Isabel, known to many as "Jiggs", passed away February 7, 2000 at Hillcrest Place, Brandon, Manitoba in her 92nd year. Katharine will be missed and lovingly remembered by her sister Marguerite and brother Bert, both of Brandon; nephew Jim McDole of Winnipeg; nieces, Janie (Tom) Breneman, Brandon and Carla (Rick) Fulton of Birtle. Great nieces and nephews who will also miss her quick wit are Chris, Jodie and Kara Breneman, Jill and Tim Fulton. Katharine was predeceased by her parents, James and Mary (Kelly) sisters, Muriel and Madge and sister-in-law Dorothy McDole. Katharine was born in Winnipeg on August 16, 1908 at the family home moving to Elgin, Manitoba with her family in 1918. She left Elgin to attend the University of Manitoba, graduating as a dietitian. She did post-graduate work in the Royal Victoria Hospital, Montreal and was employed by the S.S. Kresge Company in Winnipeg and Calgary. In July, 1940, Katharine enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps. She went overseas in August, 1940 where she was the first dietitian in No. 5 Canadian General Hospital, England. In 1943 she went to Sicily and then to Italy. Katharine was decorated for Distinguished Service in 1944, being made an Associate of the Royal Red Cross. She returned home on V.E. Day and became the District Dietitian for Manitoba and Saskatchewan. In later years, she loved to reminisce of the time overseas and what an experience it was for a young lady. After receiving her discharge, Katharine moved to Kingston, Ontario in 1946. She started her career with Canadian Industries Limited (DuPont) in November, 1946 as Cafeteria Section Head, later working in the Personnel Department retiring in 1973. Katharine continued to live in Kingston, enjoying the company of her many friends. In 1991, she moved to Brandon to be closer to family. She lived on her own until 1997 at which time she moved to Hillcrest Place. A family service was held Saturday, February 12 at Kowalchuks Funeral Home with interment at the Elgin Cemetery. Donations in Katharines memory can be made to The Elgin Community Fund in care of The Brandon Area Foundation, Box 216, Brandon, Manitoba, R7A 5Y8. Arrangements were entrusted to Kowalchuks Funeral Home, Souris, Manitoba.
