ELAINE CARTLIDGE (COOK) Peacefully, on Monday, February 14, 2000 at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg, MB, with her family by her side, B. Elaine Cartlidge (Cook), aged 68 years. Elaine was predeceased by her first husband Gordon Cook and her parents, George and Hilda Seater. She is survived by her beloved husband James (Jim) Cartlidge; her son Duane Cook (Louise Valade) her daughter Shawna Cook (Bruce Bennett) siblings, Shirley Whelpton (Harvey), Edmund Seater (Dorothy), Beverly Moore (Robert) and Marilyn Sakakibara (Tosh). Step-children, Lorraine Baisinger, Jim Cartlidge (Shirley), Marilyn Paterson (Gary), Bill Cartlidge, Colleen Smith (Mike), Bob Cartlidge (Shirley) grandchildren, Tamera and Tiffany Cook, Natalie and Sean Bennett, Michelle Baisinger, Sheena and Sam Paterson, Heather, Andrew and Austin Smith and Dana and Laura Cartlidge; and many nieces and nephews. Elaine was born in 1932 and raised in Rivers, MB. She moved to Winnipeg in 1949 to attend Success Business College from which she graduated. She married Gordon Cook in 1952; they were married for 42 years and together they raised two children. Elaine was employed by the Manitoba Government as an Executive Assistant to the Deputy Premier for four years and the National Advance Person for the Province of Manitoba. She was also affiliated with Beauty Counsellors of Canada for 30 years with several years spent in management, responsible for up to 400 representatives. Elaine was a volunteer for numerous organizations; Canadian Cancer Society where she was the assistant and campaign chairman of the St. Vital Unit and canvassed for over 25 years. She was Individuals Chairman for the United Way in 1982. Also canvassed for the Salvation Army, Canadian Diabetic Society and Heart and Kidney Foundation. She was the first President of the Riel Womens Progressive Conservatives. She has served on the Funeral Directors Board of Administration for the Province of Manitoba for the last ten years. Elaines devout faith kept her actively involved with the Parish of St. Mary Magdalene where she was the Peoples Warden and served on vestry for many years in a number of different capacities. Her church family meant so much to her. Elaine was an active, dynamic person with a deep sense of community and a rich spiritual life. She had a warm and loving personality that touched the lives of so many. Her positive outlook on life was an inspiration to us all. She loved, was loved, and will be missed by all her family and friends. Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 18, at 1:00 p.m. in Thomson Funeral Chapels, 669 Broadway, with the Rev. Robert L. Webster officiating, followed by interment in St. Vital Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Thursday, February 17 from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. in Thomson Funeral Chapels. Honorary pallbearers will be Shirley Duckworth, Edith Hansen, Maxine Papas, Bea Weager, Mabel McKnight, Barb Crow, Margaret Csordas, Margaret Tapley, Olive Coomber, Norm Coghlan, Lola Cook, Carol Millard. Pallbearers will be Ed Seater, Ryan Whelpton, Dale Whelpton, Max Tapley, Shelagh Moore, Andrew Cook, Marilyn Paterson, Bob Cartlidge. The family gratefully acknowledges Dr. Brian Penner and Dr. Andrew Maksymiuk for their care and compassion, as well as the nursing staff on GH4 at the Health Sciences Centre (in particular Shelley, Tannis, Claudia, Lauri-Ann, Jo-Ann, Erica and Andrea) and the nurses in the Chemotherapy Room (especially Carla, Julia and Shawn).
