JEANETTE (JENNY) DECUYPERE (nee JANNEKE HAAK) Peacefully on Sunday, February 13, 2000, at Tache Centre in St. Boniface, age 98, cherished wife of the late Rene DeCuypere and loving mother of Denise (Dr. Gerard Landry) of Lindale, Texas, Henry (Henrietta Blanchard) of Winnipeg and Donald (Emma Bourrier) of Ottawa, Ontario. Beloved daughter of the late Abraham Haak and Dina deReu; dear sister to Adriana (Walter Ricketts) and Elizabeth (Angus Shortt). Predeceased by her late brothers, Adrian of Winnipeg and John of Delta, B.C. Janneke (Jenny) was born into a family of hard-working Dutch farmers in Zuidezande, Netherlands. The oldest of five children, she immigrated to North America with her family, arriving on St. Patricks Day, March 17, 1913. In 1924 after a courtship made possible during weekly outdoor concerts in her community, she married Rene DeCuypere at the Belgian Sacred Heart Church. Afterwards, she devoted her life to raising a Christian family. Jennys husband worked as a machinist for Canadian National Railways in Transcona. When he was laid off during the "Dirty Thirties", they moved to Port Kells, B.C., where they farmed. Rene was called back to work in 1937 and they returned to settle on rue. St. Jean Baptiste in old St. Boniface. Jenny had a welcoming, jovial nature. She had a great fondness for conversation, and learned to speak French and English, in addition to her native tongue. In her prime, Jenny was a robust, no-nonsense person. She had a passion for vivid colours, lively jigs, good food, picnics, and gardening. Never idle, Jenny would knit or crochet countless articles for charity, as well as cherished heirlooms for her family. She lovingly cared for her perennial flower beds, flowering shrubs and vegetable garden-ready to share the bounty of fresh fruit, vegetables and home-made preserves with friends and neighbours alike. Her generous and sociable outlook won her respect and loyalty of: her Community, the Church, and her beloved Belgium, Dutch and Kiwanis Clubs, where she regularly indulged in tea, polka and card-playing until her fear of poor weather and eventual frailness kept her away. Today, Jennys heirs exemplify her non-stop energy; Christian Ethics; fun-loving spirit and reverence for Nature. She is survived by her three children, Denise, Henry and Donald; 14 grandchildren and more than 15 great-grandchildren. The family express their sincere gratitude to everyone who visited and cared for Jenny while she resided at Tache Centre, especially our friend Laurie Schellekens, whom Jenny came to love dearly. The Prayer Vigil will take place on Wednesday, February 16, at 8:00 p.m. in Christ The King Roman Catholic Church, 847 St. Marys Rd. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, February 17, at 11:00 a.m. also in Christ The King Roman Catholic Church. The Rev. Fr. Gerry Ward presiding. Jenny will be laid to rest beside Rene in Green Acres Memorial Gardens. A reception will follow in the Heritage Room at Green Acres Funeral Chapel, Hwy. #1 East at Green Acres Lane. Flowers would be welcome in memory of Jenny - she loved them during this lifetime and we expect that she will in the next. GREEN ACRES FUNERAL CHAPEL 222-3241
