Peacefully, after a short battle with cancer, Shirley Johnston passed away on February 14, 2000, at the Thompson General Hospital, Thompson, MB.
Shirley was born on April 6, 1935, in Sperling, MB, to Gordon and Kae Ferris. She married Ross Johnston in July, 1956 and settled in Manitou, MB. In December of 1973 the family moved to Thompson, a city that Mom grew to love. In 1976 Mom returned to teaching, first as a substitute, then full time at R.D. Parker Collegiate. She loved teaching and kept in touch with many of her students after they graduated.
Mom was predeceased by her parents; her brother Jim in 1992; and her granddaughter Crystal Hysert in 1985. Her memory will be cherished always by her children, Tanis (Jim) of Winnipeg, Sharon Johnston of Edmonton, AB, Murray (Michelle Parent) Johnston and Wayne Johnston, all of Thompson; her grandsons, Jim Johnston, and Erik and Andrew; brother Doug (Sandy) Ferris of Burlington, ON; sister-in-law Kay Ferris of Carman; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
The family would like to thank Isabelle Newell and Ann Lindsay for their help and support, as well as the doctors and nurses at the Thompson General Hospital for their care and compassion shown to Mom and her family during her illness.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held Thursday, February 17 at 4:00 p.m. at St. John's United Church, Thompson. Interment will take place at a later date in Sperling.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, or to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada, 4th Floor, 141 Broadway, Winnipeg.
