GYTHA CLEMENT (Gyda Palsdottir Gudmundsson) We are sad to announce the sudden passing of our beloved Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, sister, aunt and friend on February 16, 2000 at the Grace General Hospital. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband Ralph in 1976; a granddaughter Jamie Bannatyne in 1976; her sister Asa Minaker in 1991 and her brother Asvaldur (Walter) in 1993. Gytha was born April 21, 1916 in Winnipeg, the eldest child of Susanna and Pall Gudmundsson who immigrated from Iceland in 1913. She was fiercely proud of her Icelandic heritage and traced it back to 1345. Gytha spent her youth in Brooklands and moved to Charleswood in 1937 as a new bride. She was an honorary member of the Charleswood Historical Society. Her happiest moments were spending time with her family, working in her yard and reading biographies and historical books about Manitoba and Iceland. She would captivate all with her storytelling and incredible memory. She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Geraldine Bannatyne (Bob), Joan Lannoo (Maurice), Bill (Debbie), Jill Paskewitz (Greg) and John; her grandchildren, Robert (Patsy), Kimberley, Garth (Claudia), Lisa and Shane Bannatyne, Brent, Colleen (Cam), Jeffrey, Ian (Charlene) and Darren Lannoo and Laurie McCaughan (Louis), Michael Leonard (Nicole), Shannon Wolf (Sheldon), Kelly and Kristin Clement, Jayne, Susan, Laura, Andrea and Sarah Paskewitz, Jaclyn and Victoria Clement and her ten great-grandchildren. She will also be dearly missed by her sisters Laufey Hart (Bill) of Combermere, Ontario and Ragnhildur (Ranke) Banman (Jack) of Toronto and many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. A celebration of her life will be held Tuesday, February 22, at Charleswood United Church, 4820 Roblin Blvd. (at Dieppe) at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the VIP Millennium Fund (Valuing Icelandic Presence at the University of Manitoba) Rm. 179, Continuing Education Complex, U of M, Winnipeg, R3T 2N2, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 301-352 Donald St., or a charity of your choice.
