BERTHA PETERS (nee AMMETER) Our beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend Bertha Peters departed this life on Saturday, February 19, 2000 at the age of 86 years. She passed away at the Victoria Hospital shortly after a sudden illness. Bertha was born on June 7, 1913 in Karabulach, Georgia, the sixth of 12 children born to John and Emma Ammeter. She immigrated to Canada in 1929 as part of the "Swiss Family Ammeter", residing near Starbuck, Man. She completed her secondary education in Starbuck and was employed in the household of Norman and Gladys Hamilton, becoming lifelong friends with them. Bertha embarked on a career as a Licensed Practical Nurse. While employed at Concordia Hospital she gave a whole new meaning to the term "quality patient care" and wound up engaged to a certain appendix patient named P.J. (Pete) Peters. They were married on November 15, 1941 in Starbuck and Bertha proved to be the rock of stability in a union that spanned 58 years, a World War, and Petes activities as: teacher, student, potato specialist and strawberry specialist. Together they endured various illnesses, accidents, heartaches and triumphs. Bertha continually displayed courage, perseverance and optimism and was rarely, if ever, heard to complain. She was a loving, loyal and committed partner, and a nurturing and caring mother and grandmother who provided solid moral values. In her unobtrusive way she deplored idleness, displayed diligence and shunned the spotlight. She was a wonderful homemaker with special skills in knitting, sewing and the culinary arts. Her family Christmas turkey dinners were feasts of plenty. If only she had spent more time sampling her delicious fare instead of ensuring no one else went wanting. Crocheting and needlepoint were areas of creativity in which Granny B excelled. Her handmade tablecloths, wedding dresses and baptismal gowns were exquisite. Her needlepoint capturing of the Swiss homestead in Isenfluh was marvellous, as were the special needlepoint pictures created for her children and grandchildren. Bertha was a faithful member of St. Pauls Lutheran, Hope Lutheran and Epiphany Lutheran. She was a keenly sympathetic visitor who spent many hours visiting the sick and shut-ins. She also helped friends and family with countless acts of kindness and generosity. Our loved one leaves to mourn her husband Pete; her children, Richard (Carol) and Cindy (Ray) and her grandchildren Michelle, Erin, Eric and Ashley; her brothers, Ernest and John and sisters, Mary, Anna, Rose, Alice, Mina (Doug) and Edith (Don) and their families; also John and Doreen Peters and Henry and Agnes Koop and their families; and many other nephews, nieces, friends and relatives. She was predeceased by her parents, John and Emma; her sisters, Martha and Hulda and brother Adolf. The family wishes to thank Health Sciences Centre and Victoria General staff for their kindness, with special thanks to Dr. Scott Young, Pastor Ed Mitchler and to Berthas special caregiver Joyce Nairn. A funeral service will be held at Epiphany Lutheran Church, 200 Dalhousie Dr., Winnipeg, at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 23. There will be a viewing at the church half an hour prior to the service. Interment will take place at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, 4000 Portage Ave. The family respectfully requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Berthas name to a favourite charity of ones choice.
