JAMES R. DOW, DSO, DFC AND BAR 1919 - 2000 It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of James R. Dow, on Tuesday, February 22, 2000 with his family by his side at the Health Sciences Centre. Jim will be lovingly remembered by his wife Donna, his children Michael, Terry and Robin, son-in-law George and grandchildren, Gillian, Katherine, Elizabeth, Grace, and his sister Norma. Jim graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1940 with his Bachelor of Commerce degree. Upon graduation in 1940, he immediately enlisted in the RCAF and qualified for aircrew training. He obtained his observers wing in 1941 at Rivers, Manitoba. Following his OTU at Lossiemouth, Scotland, he joined 9 Squadron RAF in 1942 and began bombing European targets flying Wellington aircraft. Before completing his first tour, he was posted to India with 215 Squadron RAF flying Wellington aircraft. In 1943, he returned to England and joined 97 Pathfinder Squadron RAF flying Lancaster aircraft. When his pilot transferred to 635 squadron RAF, Jim went with him and together they flew 45 Pathfinder missions, which rated the equivalent of two full tours. He went on to finish another Pathfinder tour with yet another 635 Squadron crew. He was one of a handful of airmen who completed four full tours of operations. During this time he was awarded his first DFC, then a Bar to that decoration, and finally the DSO making him one of the most highly decorated airmen in the RCAF. Jim is a retired partner at Deloitte and Touche. He loved to spend time with his family and friends at his cottage on Clearwater Bay. A service of remembrance will take place on Friday, February 25 at 2:30 p.m.at St. Andrews River Heights United Church, 255 Oak Street. If friends so desire, donation in memory of Jim may be made to the Manitoba Heart Follow-up Study, T148-770 Bannatyne Ave., Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3E OW3.
