Ernst was born in Kaisertreu, Poland on March 23, 1914. He was blessed with three wonderful sons, Ralf (Pat) of Roswell, N.M., Winfried (Donna) and Harold (Krystyna) five grandchildren, Douglas (Ralf) of Phoenix, AZ; Trevor and Julie (Winfried) and the twins, Ashleigh and Jonathan (Harold), all of Winnipeg, Man. and one great-grandson Jacob (Douglas) of Phoenix, AZ. Ernst married Hildegard on March 7, 1953 and in 1954, they immigrated to Canada with son Ralf, joining many close family and friends in Winnipeg. Upon arriving, Ernst spent many years installing tile and marble, his work still adorns many buildings in downtown Winnipeg. Later, he joined Spiroll Corporation and became known as "BIG ERNIE" to all his co-workers before retiring in 1981. Ernsts leisure time was always precious to him. He loved to spend time surrounded by family and friends at the cottage he built in Lester Beach, on Lake Winnipeg. He enjoyed nothing better than an evening playing a good game of chess or Skat. Always very creative with his hands, Ernst was always inventing a better way of doing things. He built a float at the lake and a trailer that lead to much fishing, camping and travelling enjoyment for Ernst and his family. The family would like to thank the staff at the Victoria Hospital for their kindness and support.
