GRACE ALVA HANEY (nee DRYSDALE) November 29, 1910 - February 23, 2000 Mrs. Grace Haney, 89, died peacefully in the early hours of Wednesday, February 23, 2000, at the Ottawa Hospital, General Campus. She will be much missed by her relations, many friends and neighbours all of whom came to appreciate her lively and inquiring spirit. Graces husband, William Leslie Haney, predeceased her, as did their daughter, Susan. She is survived by her former son-in-law Dr. Robert OKell of Winnipeg; sisters-in-law, Joan Drysdale of Winnipeg and Kay Nelson of Vancouver; and many nieces and nephews across the country. Grace was born and grew up in Winnipeg, where she trained as a nurse. She and husband Bill, moved to the Ottawa region in 1942 as Bill took up a position with the National Research Council. After the war they settled in Manor Park and for many years Grace devoted herself to the family and to private avocations such as music, art, literature and gardening. In the later stages of Bills career at N.R.C., where he rose to the position of Director of the Radio and Electrical Engineering Division, they had opportunities to travel widely, including the spending of some years in London, England. After Bills retirement Grace began to take her painting more seriously and soon became an accomplished artist, mostly with water colours. She had a number of single shows at galleries in the Ottawa area. After Bills death Grace continued with her painting and other interests, including playing the piano and a lively correspondence about both personal and public issues with dozens of friends across the country. With great determination she overcame the challenges of a serious car accident and of cancer, and remained a very vital, fully engaged person until the very day when she was suddenly affected by a stroke. A memorial celebration of Graces life will be held on Saturday, February 26 at 10:00 a.m. in the chapel of Hulse, Playfair and McGarry, McLeod and OConnor Streets, Ottawa. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, or to the William Leslie Haney Memorial Fund, which Grace established, at the University of Manitoba (in care of Department of Private Funding), Winnipeg, MB R3T 2N2.
