Date of Passing: Feb 23, 2000
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryNICK (MYKOLA) LABA It is with great sorrow that on February 23, 2000, with his family by his side, Nick (Mykola) passed away peacefully at the Seven Oaks General Hospital, at the age of 80 years. Nick is survived by his loving wife Tillie; daughters, Daria, Dorothy (Jim Anderson) and son Ken Steinke (Irene) six grandchildren, Tracey (Travis Imlah), Tara, Jeff, David, Kevin and Brian; five great-grandchildren, Wilfred, Kyle, Chase, Cole and Kaden. He is also survived by one brother Peter in the Ukraine along with numerous nieces and nephews. Nick was predeceased by his parents, two brothers and four sisters. Nick was born in the village of Pyatnichani in Lviv, Ukraine. He left home at 19 years of age to fight in the Second World War and was captured by the German army and was a prisoner of war for almost 3 years. After his release, he spent time in Europe and came to Canada in 1948 to work underground in the gold mines in Bissett, Manitoba. He left Bissett and moved to Winnipeg taking a short-term position with Fairfield Industries in 1951. From then until his retirement in 1985, he worked in sales with Central Products and Foods Ltd. Nick was a member of Sts. Vladimir and Olga Cathedral, Dumka choir and Canadian Institute Prosvita. Nicks happiest times were spent with his family and his grandchildren. He was very proud of them and often told them so. He enjoyed watching game shows on television and often felt sympathy for those who didnt win. Nick enjoyed playing the lotteries and his motto was if you dont play you cant lose! Even though Nick suffered many painful stays at the hospital, he always had a smile on his face and a joke or two for the doctors and nurses. Nick faced many medical obstacles over the past five years but never ever gave up even though his body was tired of fighting near the end. Honorary pallbearers are Maria and Harry Zuk, Roman Hawrylin, Anna and Stephen Sukich and Margaret and Eddy Craig. Active pallbearers will be George Daviduk, Alvin Froelich, Alan Akins, Ron Block, Wayne Block and Malford Steinke. A very heartfelt thank-you to all the staff of Seven Oaks Hospital for their kindness to and care of Nick during his many visits over the past few years. A special thank-you to all the doctors that helped to improve Nicks quality of life during his lengthy illness. To our neighbours, Margaret and Eddy Craig, thank-you for all the support and help you have given our family over the past few years. Prayers will be sung at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 27, at Sts.
