Irene was born in The Queens Arms, in Salisbury, England, on June 24, 1905. The first daughter of Flora and Albert Mitchell. Mom set said for Canada in May 1924 for what was to be a two month holiday. Instead, it was the beginning of her life long love affair with Canada. Mom worked as a hostess in the Eatons Grill Room, before marrying her one true love, Alf, in 1926. They raised two children, Pat and Ron, in the family home in Weston, where friends and family shared many happy times. She volunteered extensively at Cecil Rhodes School and Weston Community Centre. Mom loved Canadian sports with a passion. For many years, she was a Bomber season ticket holder, hockey fan at all levels, but most of all, loved curling - both from behind the glass and on T.V. With Alfs death in 1972, Mom devoted all her attention to supporting her children and grandchildren in all their endeavours. In her eyes, we were all perfect, and her pride in us was a constant source of strength. Moms summer home at Grand Beach was a favourite gathering place for a large number of family and friends. From the very young to her most senior neighbours, she was "Gramma Light" - loved by one and all for her youthful outlook on life and for her generous hospitality. Mom is lovingly survived by her daughter Pat; son Ron and daughter-in-law Ina. Also left to mourn her passing are her grandchildren, Garth, Laurie and Lisa (Darren) and seven great-grandchildren,Tom and Todd Light and their mother Valerie, Patrick and Natalie Beth Proctor and Joyce and Ed Chmelnicki are especially remembered for all the ways they enriched her life. Cremation has taken place, and a memorial service will be held at a later date at Knox United Church (Chapel), 400 Edmonton St., with Dr. Bruce Bailey officiating. Arrangements entrusted to Wereschuk Funeral Services. Special thanks to the staff of Park Manor Personal Care Home for the gentle care they took of Mom over the past few years. Should you desire, a memorial donation may be made to the Cerebral Palsy Association of Manitoba, 825 Sherbrook St., R3A 1M5, Park Manor Personal Care Home, 310 Redonda St., or a charity of your choice. "Do not weep for me. Do you mourn the butterfly Released from its ugly cocoon? At last, I too am free Gone are the tangled webs of confusion; Gone the dark places. Rejoice with me! But if you cannot be joyful, At least, do not weep."
