BERNICE MARTHA MacDONALD (nee WANGENSTEEN) It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Bernice MacDonald on Saturday, February 26, 2000, at Middlechurch Home of Winnipeg. Bernice will be lovingly remembered by her children, Elaine and George (known to the family and childhood friends as Steve) her grandchildren, Steven and Tracey; and by her sister, Mae. Bernice was born in Lockwood, Sask. She graduated from Normal School in Saskatoon and taught for several years in northern Saskatchewan before marrying Hanford ("Mac") MacDonald. After the war, the family moved to Manitoba. Bernice continued to teach near Fraserwood, as a supply teacher in Selkirk, at Camp Shilo, and in Winnipeg. During her teaching years in Winnipeg, she took university courses toward a degree in Home Economics. In 1967, she went back to university full time and graduated in 1969 with a Bachelor of Home Economics. She loved to travel. After her retirement ("better to wear out than to rust out" was one of her responses when asked why she did not retire when Mac did), they spent time in the winter in Texas, travelled to Scandinavia, the British Isles, New Zealand, and to many parts of North America. In her last travelling years, she spent time each year in Sweden, with her sister, Mae, and travelled to both Spain and China. Bernice had a wonderful sense of humour. She enjoyed entertaining, was a great cook, and loved being asked for advice on things culinary (like "I need baking powder and dont have any. What do I do now?", and she always had an answer that worked). A Service of Remembrance will take place on Wednesday, March 1 at 2:00 p.m. at Leatherdale Gardiner Funeral Chapel, 1501 Waverley St. The family wishes to thank the staff at Middlechurch Home of Winnipeg and the staff in rehabilitation at Deer Lodge for their care and concern for Bernice. If friends so desire, donations in memory of Bernice MacDonald may be made to a charity of their choice. LEATHERDALE GARDINER 1501 Waverley Street 949-4860
