DENISE DAWNE CURTIS (nee WUR) It is with most heavy heart we announce that after suffering a brain aneurysm, our dear, beautiful Denise died Saturday, February 26 at the Health Sciences Centre, with her loving family at her side. Denise was born May 10, 1967 in Selkirk and lived there most of her life, recently moving to St. Vital. She leaves in great sorrow her beloved husband Murray and the two brightest stars in her life Tessa (4 months) and Steven (5 years). Also in profound grief, her Mom and Dad, Gloria and Bob Wur and brother Rick Wur all of Selkirk. She will be lovingly remembered by in-laws Wilf and Jean Curtis of Steinbach; brothers-in-law, Tom (Margie), Norm (Beve) and Phil; sisters-in-law, Sheila McVicar (Grant), Lauren Bilbey (Rob), Janet Cobden (Peter) and by her many cousins, colleagues, friends and students. Denise took all her early schooling in Selkirk and graduated from Lord Selkirk Regional in 1985. One of her great joys was being in the Royal Blues Band. During her teens she was church organist/soloist at Notre Dame Roman Catholic in Selkirk and St. Stanislaus in East Selkirk. She went on to the University of Manitoba graduating with a Music Teaching degree. Denise while currently on maternity leave, was a music teacher at Highbury and Darwin Schools in the St. Vital School Division. Denise was one of the first students of the Selkirk Ukrainian Dance School and worked her way up to the Senior Troyanda Dancers with which she performed for many years at events across Canada. Her great interest in music was with the Winnipeg Philharmonic Choir of which she was a keen and dedicated member for many years. One of her most treasured memories with the "Phil" was the performance given at Carnegie Hall on Canada Day. But her greatest accomplishments of all was in becoming an excellent mother to Steven under very difficult conditions. Her nurturing, her guidance, her strong moral compass have provided Steven with a strong foundation. Her enthusiasm, her sparkle, her zest for life are gone from our lives forever - words cannot describe how we will miss her. Liturgical Rites will be given by Fr. Bo Wardzinski assisted Fr. Art Seaman and Fr. John Krachor. Prayer service will be held Tuesday, February 29, at 7:00 p.m. at Notre Dame Church, 269 Jemima St., Selkirk. Funeral Mass, 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 1, at Notre Dame Church. Pallbearers will be Michael Kologie, Mickey Wur, Robbie Wur, Grant McVicar, Troy Pauls and Phil Curtis. The nurses and doctors of Surgical Intensive Care Unit, Health Sciences Centre are among the best anywhere. Their professionalism, dedication and compassion were so evident at all times, and appreciated. Friends of Denise have set up a "Trust Fund for Steven and Tessa". In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in their name and sent to G. McVicar, 406 Whitegates Cres., Winnipeg, MB, R3K 1L8. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in charge of arrangements.
