Richard was born December 29th, 1928 in Pine Dock. He was predeceased by his father Harry 1968; mother Josephine 1980; sister Dorothy 1982; daughter Paulette 1999. He is survived by his wife 47 years Mabel; his sons, Ron, Lorne (Anna), Garry, Franklin (Cheryl), Dennis, Calvin and daughter Janice (Daniel). He also leaves to mourn 13 grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces and many, many friends. After the loss of his close friend and fishing partner Albert Snifeld and sister-in-law Isabel (piney) he took guardianship of his niece Patsy, and recently in September 1999 after the loss of his daughter Paulette he took guardianship of his granddaughter Shantel. Dad was a commercial fisherman all of his life, starting out on his own at the age of 15 years, until his 65th year. In between fishing seasons he found other means of employment, he enjoyed carpentry, he worked many years for Carl Monkman, and took on many projects of his own. He enjoyed talking about the years freighting in the north for Riverton Transfer. He also worked many other various jobs. He also spent many years in the outdoors trapping which he enjoyed. In his younger years, he loved to play guitar and sing, and had taught Ron and Paulette to play guitar. In his retirement years, he enjoyed telling stories and playing cards. Poor health prevented him from many of the outdoor things he enjoyed doing. Hell be sadly missed by all. Pallbearers will be his sons. Honorary Pallbearers will be his brothers, Roland, Clifford and son-in-law Danny, brothers-in-law Stanley Sutherland, Lindsay Monkman, and grandson Richard. The family wishes to thank Dr. Weisenthal, Dr. Chapnick and staff at the Johnson Memorial Hospital in Gimli, and the Doctors and staff of the Concordia Hospital, Winnipeg. The funeral will take place on March 2nd at 1:00 p.m. at the Pine Dock Community Hall. Viewing for family and friends will be from 12:15 p.m. until 12:45 p.m. Neil and Edith Von Gunton will be officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 301-355 Donald St. Winnipeg, MB R3B 2H8. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk are in care of arrangements. God looked around His garden, And found an empty space. He then looked down upon the earth And saw your tired face. He put His arms around you, And lifted you to rest. Gods garden must be beautiful He takes only the best. He knew that you were suffering, He knew that you were in pain. He knew the road was getting rough And the hills were hard to climb. So He closed your weary eyelids And whispered "Peace be thine". It broke our hearts to lose you, But you did not go alone, For part of us went with you The day God called you home. Forever loved, always remembered, and dearly missed by wife Mabel, children Ron, Lorne Garry, Franklin, Dennis, Janice, Calvin, and all your grandchildren.
